Wow.

Looks like a good time to stay out of GD for a few days and get some actual work done.

Perhaps we need to petition Skinner for a frivolous whining forum for Oscar shit?

24. I 've NEVER personally attacked anyone on this site, but Will...
...you are obviously not gay.

You clearly have little or no understanding of what "Brokeback" meant to many, many, many gay people, and what it means when a film that has won 15+ Best Picture awards worldwide loses a Best Picture Oscar.

You clearly haven't had to listen to people for weeks or months sniggering, snarling, about "that damn fag cowboy movie." Those people who are voting on our rights, writing our laws, rearing kids in local churches that will think like they do.

America is a country whose art, for good or ill, expresses a tremendous amount about it. What we create, what we reward, what we respect as "award-worthy" says something.

You don't know what it's like to read these bulletin boards nationwide today, and realize that people aren't just slamming or attacking a movie: they're attacking you. Everything you love, everything that is you. The cruelty, the nastiness, is straight out of Freeperville.

You don't know the pain and sickness in the stomach that I and many others are feeling right now--pain and frustration almost comparable to the 2004 election.

I know you to be a good, kind, decent, well-intentioned man, so I can only assume this is a moment of temporary blindness or obliviousness on your part.

But for a hell of a lot of people, this is another paving stone on the road to America As Hell.

but from what I've read, it looks like last night's decision only reaffirms the irrelevance of the Oscars. When I see a good movie, I know it's a good movie without needing some asshole from the "Academy" to validate my opinion. Give the damn thing to "Weekend at Bernies 3" for all I care.

36. well, initially it was just offering opinions on the results
then it turned into some people taking offense to WHY the results were what they were (hey, I'm a movie buff who sees a movie weekly so I'm interested). I opined on who won but honestly, who can really say why the Academy picked what they did? Like someone else said, it's not like a foot race where there is an absolute winner.

47. I was super busy all day. Can someone give me a synopsis?
What was all the squabbling about? I thought the awards were pretty fun, especially my dear Jon Stewart. I was mildly surprised Crash won Best Picture but not disappointed. It was a great film. Honestly, the only two films I saw out of the Best Picture nominees were Crash and Brokeback Mountain and I thought they were both great. If I'm being completely objective I would have to say that Crash is the better film (IMHO) but I would've been thrilled if Brokeback won based on the subject. So either way was good. I would've even been happy if Good Night and Good Luck won based on the subject, but I knew it wouldn't.

All I can say is it sure beat seeing Titanic win. Gack.

49. in brief:
People were/are upset that "Crash" won over "Brokeback Mountain." Some thought that the decision was a reflection of the Academy's underlying homophobia; others thought "Crash" generally sucked as a movie and that "Brokeback" was robbed. Some people either defended "Crash" or dissed "Brokeback Mountain." Thus, the virtual slugfest commenced, and DUers proceeded to kick anyone who disagreed with them in the virtual teeth.

Also, some people thought Hoffman winning for "Capote" was another sign of Hollywood's underlying homophobia, in that his portrayal of Capote is de-sexualized to the point where he's non-threatening. Thus, the Academy couldn't bring themselves to give the award to Heath Ledger, because "Brokeback Mountain" dealt more directly with homosexual love/desire.

I might be missing some other facet of the discussion. But that's what I saw in a nutshell.

(And, in the interests of full disclosure, I was one of the people who badmouthed "Brokeback Mountain." So flame away if you feel the need. :) )

I feel pretty much the same way. "Brokeback Mountain" was not my fave, but I would have been fine had it won. And I was _very_ happy that Ang Lee won for Best Director. He's deserved an Oscar for quite some time now. Plus, he directed one of my all-time faves, "Sense and Sensibility."

But this was one of those instances where all I'd have been doing is hiding threads. This article was originally in GD, but got tossed in here after the mods clamped down on the Oscarpalooza that was happening (which was an excellent decision).

I figured there'd be brawling in the Lounge over the Oscars; that's what the Lounge is here for, right? So this thread is out of place in here.
