2. He's had some kind of cancer.

I'm not sure if it was mouth or throat cancer and it's obviously taken its toll on him but he still looks bad.

...this may be the aftermath, but I'm thinking it's a combination of ongoing substance abuse issues, the cancer, and the divorce /separation (whatever it was) from Valerie. That's a lot of crap for one person to handle.

5. From what I've seen,

Chemo will fuck you up good for quite a while, so it's entirely possible the cancer treatment has a lot to do with how he looks. Bear in mind that the actual photograpyh is less than flaterring as well.

4. Word is that he's still both smoking and drinking.

He's been hard on his body (smoking and drinking since he was 12), and his body has in return been equally hard on him.

He doesn't look too far off from othe rockers his age. That's the lifestyle of a chain smoking, whiskey drinking rock star. Here he is at 21 when VH broke out. They were so amazing back then.
