Okay, anyone remember these radio programs?
(I know, I'm dating myself)

Baby Snooks
Gangbuster
Inner Sanctum
Suspense
Stella Dallas
Backstage Wife
Yukon King

Lots more that I can't recall at the moment. What were some of your favorites?

1. King Biscuit Flower Hour?
Wish there'd been more radio drama when I was a kid in the '60s and '70s. I used to listen to Prairie Home Companion religiously and just fell out of the habit when my daughter was born.

14. I debated with myself about the spelling.
I could have sworn they changed it to Flower to make it seem hippy dippy. I must have had too much to dream last night.

3. Herb Jepko's 'Nightcaps' show
You could talk about anything except religion or extreme politics, and when "Tinkerbell" came on it was time to wrap it up.

Also had an absolutely hideous opening theme.

4. No, But I Remember "Don McNeill & The Breakfast Club"
Edited on Wed Dec-03-03 12:03 PM by CO Liberal
I grew up in NJ, listening to WABC (770 AM) from New York. "The Breakfast Club" was carried by WABC up until the Late '60s, when Don McNeill retired. They would interrupt the Top 40 music for an hour every morning to carry this radio relic.

10. Fiction and Fact, with Sam's Almanac
was a daily feature of trivia or some such.
I remember the theme song:
Good morning Breakfast Clubbers
de dum de dum dum

Anybody remember the lyrics?

5. Every single one of them.
My favorite was Inner Sanctum with the creaky door.

Also remember the Green Hornet, the Shadow, Amos and Andy. Oh, and let's not forget the Lone Ranger.

I believe I listened to Rin Tin Tin, but my favorite was Sgt. Preston of the Yukon. His faithful dog was Yukon King; is it the same program, areschild?

(Actually, I remember Jimmie and Marcy, but she left on pregnancy leave and never came back)

Also, I freaked out a friend when I told of KDKA playing "In the Mood" with chickens.

11. Ma Perkins
I don't remember it,but my mother evidently liked it a lot. I do enjoy listening to classic radio programs when I get the chance...a true slice of Americana.

12. dum-dum, dum-dum, DUMPTEY-dum
"This is your FBI, in peace and war."
rat-a-tat-tat-tat

Lorenzo Jones (Finicule, Finicula was the theme song)
Young Widder Brown
Young Doctor Kildare
I had a middle aged, granny-type sitter (in her home) one summer when my mom was working. She listened to the soaps all day. Made me PB&J sandwiches that I can still taste.

Listening on my own I heard:
Fibber McGhee and Molly - McGhee NEVER got all that junk out of the hall closet. And the ever put-upon Molly's famous "T'aint funny, McGhee."
Bobby Brown(?) and the B Bar B riders.
The Lone Ranger - and Tonto, his trusty Indian companion. And all the kemo sabe jokes.
The Shadow - Lamont Cranston, with the power to cloud men's minds.
"Who know what evil lurks in the heart of man? The Shadow knows."
Hoo baby. THAT'S what I wanted. The power to clouds men's minds.
Who knew that 50 years later the repugs would find a way?
Gene Autrey's Melody Ranch, sponsored by Doublemint gum.
Amos & Andy - I know it's not PC any more, but the line still breaks me up. George "Kingfish" Stevens: "Come on Andy, let's me and you mosey on down to The Mystic Knights of the Sea lodge hall and see if we can figure a way out of this mess."

Ah, nostalgia.
How old ARE you, anyway?
;-)

If I make it to next August (pretty likely) I'll be 63.
I'm not as old as dirt, but I remember hearing about when it was invented.

22. When I was very young...

...in the mid to late '50s, I remember the family listening to radio programs. 'Marshall Dillon' & 'Perry Mason' were radio programs that went on to become popular tv shows. (How many of you kids knew that?) We also listened to a 'Batman' and a spooky show, almost like 'The Twilight Zone', but I know it wasn't that. I can't remember the name of it, only that it scared the crap oput of me when I was 7 - 8 years old.

23. Sgt. Preston of the Yukon; Lone Ranger; Green Hornet
Think that's what you meant by Yukon King. I remember listening, as a child, to Grandma's huge floor radio, in wonderment - as TV was already king in the '50s. Still, the radio programs that yet aired were mesmerizing. Wish they would bring some back; surely some AM stations could air those original episodes and carve out a "niche." Geez, Limbaugh has certainly run his course.
