Oscars: When Things Don't Go Your Way...
Folks, I didn't like "Titanic" back when it won, but when it did, my reaction was to get up and get another beer. It's fun when the movies you like get a nod, but when they don't, this upsets you...why?

It is kind of amusing to see all the histrionics about 'Crash' vs. 'Brokeback Mountain' vs. 'Good Night, and Good Luck'.

The simple fact is, all of these movies, and the many others which were nominated, were all worthy, because great actors and actresses, writers, directors, editors, producers, and countless crewmembers, worked their asses off so you could forget about your mundane lives for a few hours.

It's just a fucking gold statue, not the validation of your deepest wishes and desires. :eyes:

Like my Dad used to say, "Things don't always go your way." Or as I am saying, "Suck it up, and have a beer."

Having actually worked in the craft, I see things a bit differently than all the Ebert wannabes out there.

5. And it's just as easy to say that a self-appointed artist is the
supreme arbiter of what art is and isn't. But we all know that that's not true.

Having not "worked in the craft" is not an excuse for belittling the artistic opinions of myself and countless others.

Because a movie you didn't like gets an AWARD is only belittling one's self. I don't need to do it for you.

I said it was a poor movie, no shape bending on my part. Perhaps "Deuce Bigalow 2" was stretching it, but not by much... You seem to be the one getting bent out of shape to point out that you "worked in the craft" in an effort to belittle my opinion. You and I disagree about the movie. You've no need to point out how "experty" you are to make your opinion more correct.

No offense to any of the actors, but I didn't think the movie was Oscar-worthy. Worth watching, sure, but not Oscar-worthy.

4. What is "Oscar-worthy"?
I figure if you want a movie to be Oscar-worthy, you have to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and actually vote. They and only they determine what is "Oscar-worthy".

20. That was the point of my OP
It's not the disagreement I have a disagreement with, it's the absurd tantrums that go with the disagreement. I am passionate about movies, and I have my strong dislikes of certain movies too (hence my "Titanic" comment), but I don't go apeshit... guess that makes me a freak around here.

So I damn will take part in the discussion. And my contribution is to laugh at those who get their knickers in a knot over the outcome of an awards ceremony and missing the big picture (no pun intended).

You do not have any power in deciding who does or does not have the right to participate in any discussion, on DU, or anywhere else.

I haven't seen it so I can't comment on if I think it's worthy in my own personal acadamy award pics.

Brokeback's been my favorite with Good Night a very close second. I enjoyed both very much.

As with any movie, it's all subjective and what I think should win usually doesn't.

I'm still recovering from the four hour long commercial of Lord of the Rings.

I can't wait to see Walk the Line. Unfortunately, it's not showing anymore in town at any of the theatres. We would've seen it on Sat nite, but we ended up seeing Transamerica, instead.

Have you seen that one yet? Felicity Huffman was truly amazing in it.

16. And the thing people have to remember is that BP is for the entire film.
From the lighting to the sound to the acting to the costumes, etc. etc.

I've not seen Brokeback, but I am quite familiar with Ang Lee's work, and from what I've seen of clips, etc., Brokeback looks like a good drama. Period. I do think it got mightily shafted in the acting categories, but if we get past the "THEY'RE GAY" issue, which was the better made/paced/acted/scripted film overall? That's the question.

21. the angst over this
is some of the most unintentionally funny I've seen here in some time.

When you start wanting films to win an Academy Award because of the political/sociological content rather then the artistic content, you've
taken it in a direction it wasn't intended to take.

It's a Best Film Award, not Best Political/Culturally Significant Film Award.

24. I like it when films are politically and culturally significant
So I expect films that have those criteria to beat "The 40-Year Old Virgin", for example.

And that movie cracked me up to no end, in case people miss my point. Entertainment is the levelling factor.

But yes, it is unintentionally funny, isn't it? :D

And there were a few in this year's category that had it, too. But like you you, I'm not going to get bent out of shape if the one I like doesn't win; it's not worth the emotion to me.

Although I wanted to leap through my TV set and choke James Cameron when he bellowed "I'm King Of The World" when he won:)

47. I'm glad someone said it ...

This all got quickly ridiculous, imo.

As I said elsewhere, I didn't really like either movie that has been the source of controversy tonight. I was pulling for _Capote_, but that's just me.

On a related note, I find it sad that a story or movie or song seems to have to be some grand, dramatic expression of the human soul on a global scale or just be "different" before people seem able to enjoy it or consider it good or worthy of recognition. To make matters worse, some people seem driven to see it as all or nothing; it either sucks so bad it must be driven from human consciousness, or it is so good that you must go out, now, and purchase tickets to see it for everyone you know or might meet on the way there just to be considered a decent human being.

Some of my favorite movies are hardly artistic masterpieces, but I find them quite entertaining, which, I thought, was the point.
