Okay...so right wingers bash Hollywood.....
...for giving awards to movies regarding subjects they don't like and we talk about what a bunch of babies they are........

....but when Hollywood doesn't give an award to a film for whatever reason, left wingers are going to claim it's political and act like babies too?

The right wingers aren't going to really like "Crash" either. If they bother to see it.

1. "Crash" was the best film I've seen in years
And I'm so happy it won.

It would truly be a shame if those who haven't seen the film and who are slagging it because Brokeback Mountain and Good Night And Good Luck didn't win didn't bother to watch the film; it fits in perfectly with both.

3. Agreed.....
....in any other year, "Crash" would have been labeled the "PC choice of the Hollywood liberal elite" by assholes like O'Lielly.

4. Crash is one of my favorites of all time!
It's every bit as progressive as the others. I saw and liked Brokeback Mountain, but I liked Crash better.

8. I saw all three films you mentioned
I personally thought Brokeback was the best of the three. All good films, but Brokeback gripped me in a way that few films do.

16. Crash gripped me that same way
But I wouldn't have really cared if Brokeback Mountain won, because I really liked that, too.

2. Bravo.
"Crash" was a liberal movie. It's liberal in the best way - it looked as honestly as a film can at EVERY side of the story. It's a tremendous fim.

5. Fucking amen
All the fucking political whining I'm seeing here tonight is sickening. Movies aren't chosen because of their political agendas, which is what everyone here seems to want by whining about Good Night and Brokeback not winning. Way to play into the "Hollywood liberal" stereotype. :eyes:

I saw both Brokeback and Good Night and they were terrific films, either would've deserved the Oscar. But they would have deserved it because they were GOOD FILMS, not because they have a political agenda.

Brokeback Mountain did NOT have a political agenda, and that meme ONLY feeds into the rightwing bullshit that anything that treats gays as normal people is advancing an "agenda." Jesus Christ, you think people on DU would be smarter than that. It was a love story, first and last.

6. People like to whine when they don't get their way.

I'm glad Crash won. It's a poignant look at perceptions of racism, I thought.

7. I'm more amazed at the polarized reactions I've seen to this!

It's provoked quite a reaction here. I wonder if that's also true elsewhere.

9. Thank you.
I am sickened by the whining and complaining. Suddenly it's a Rove conspiracy that one movie wins over another. Get over yourself people.

11. It's just that many don't think Crash is very good... but it sure wouldn't
be the FIRST time a movie won best pic that I thought was far inferior to one that didn't win (this year, Brokeback IMO).

12. No, it's that many
are upset their political favorite didn't win. "Hollywood wimped out." Bullshit.

14. Well, I don't go with the "wimped out" etc. I just disagree with the
choice, from a "liking the film" standpoint.

I actually don't see Brokeback as a political movie. It's a love story about forbidden, doomed, love, just happens to involve dudes.

15. I couldn't agree more.
I've seen "Crash" and I liked it; haven't seen "Brokeback" but have no doubt it's excellent. But I suspect a lot of people assumed "Brokeback" would win Best Picture, and in that way stick it to the right wing. But that's not what the Oscars are for. Granted, they often reflect mainstream values, and maybe there was the hope that a win for "Brokeback" could serve as some sort of proof that gay relationships are receiving mainstream acceptance. Seems to me its box office success and its other Oscars have to some extent established that already.

In any event, I don't think giving the award to "Crash" can be seen as a rejection of the "politics" of "Brokeback" in any way. All it means is that, for whatever reason, they thought "Crash" was just a little better, overall. I can't either agree or disagree, but if we are going to look for any political overtones, we should keep in mind that all of the nominees had them -- all liberal. It's absolutely true that the wingnuts will hate "Crash" because it addresses racial stereotypes and bigotry in a way that's likely to make them (and us, too) pretty uncomfortable.

And, in the final analysis, it's just the freaking Oscars. They've given awards to great movies and to mediocre ones. And by the following year hardly anyone even remembers who won the year before.
