Post your oscar pool score here.
It is your job to tally your own score. Post your score in this thread. I'll verify the winner sometime Monday.

Most correct answers wins. In the event of a tie, we'll compare answers on the tiebreaker question. If there is still a tie, then I'll flip a coin or something.

The winner of the oscar pool wins their choice of any item in the DU Store.

But, hey, I was playing for serious!

I should have got King Kong for sound mixing, I put King Kong for sound editing, so...
I was wildly guessing for Original Song. There were three choices and they all sucked.

I missed all the shorts - WHO THE HELL WATCHES THE SHORTS!

40. Unfair awards, for the most part. This is what I think:
Edited on Mon Mar-06-06 12:52 AM by Julius Civitatus
Here are my impressions of this year's Oscars (the yearly celebration of Hollywood's nepotistic onanism).

- Clooney: Yeah!!! Way way to go! He was prescient too: it meant he wasn´t getting the Oscar for director. He knows how it works.

- Wallace & Grommit: Excellent. Well deserved. Love those movies.

- March of the Penguins: Very well deserved indeed, but it was a tough call. I've seen all the documentaries nominated this year, and they were all excellent (the Enron documentary may have been too wonky, but it was an excellent film). I thought Darwin's Nightmare could have walked away with the Oscar easily. One of the most gut-wrenching movies I've seen this year.

- The very shameful "let's rescue that turd" award of the year goes to "Memoirs of Geisha." Notice that every year they do the same thing: They give a few awards to a movie they expected was going to do very well in the box office, but ended up a flop. This year it was Geisha, which got a few technical awards in an effort to make up for their losses with the upcoming DVD sales (yes people, the Oscars are all about selling the movies). If you remember, last year's "let's rescue that turd" award went to "Finding Neverland." And the year before to "Cold Mountain."

- Best Costume and Art Direction should have gone to "Walk the Line." Hands down. Instead they gave both awards to "Geisha." People tend to believe that recreating something very ancient or exotic has more merit than recreating something more mundane. Big mistake. And while it is very difficult to build complex period pieces, it's usually even more difficult to recreate our recent past and make it believable. The costumes and art direction in "Walk the Line" are so proper and so legit that if you transfered that movie to vintage film stock, you would think it was a documentary. They got robbed, but I guess they had to rescue that turd from financial disaster...

- The best editing I saw of all the movies nominated this year was "Cinderella Man," by a long shot. The editing in that movie was masterful. "Crash"???? Gimme a break! There was only a couple of scenes in which the editing in crash was remarkable (the actual car crash scene). Other than that, it was standard Hollywood craft. Another movie that got robbed.

- Best song to "IT'S HARD OUT HERE FOR A PIMP"? WTF??? WTF??? Possibily the most distasteful lyrics ever to be awarded with an Oscar. I really liked "Hustle and Flow," and loved its spirit of personal growth and fighting for your own dreams.... Still, the lyrics by DJay were DESPICABLE, sexist, machoist and tasteless. The only thing remarkable about that despicable song is the spirit the actors put into it when they sing it in the movie. Period.

- Reese was cute and perky... but better than Felicity? No way. Felicity got mugged tonight. But again, remember that the Oscars are not about recognizing squat. The Oscars are about selling movies, and now Reese is a young and perky asset to sell many more movies in the future. Felicity is an amazing actress with incredible talent... but she's over 40. Kids won't go to the mall's cineplex to see Felicity. That's the sad reality of (most of) the Oscars.

- "Crash" best movie? You gotta be kidding me! While I don't' think it was a bad flick, it pulled lots of punches in the end. Lots! And they turned the end into an unrealistic, politically correct, kumbayá singing, feel-good little morsel to sell to the masses and make them feel better about themselves. This movie was nowhere near the Best

I wish Felicity Huffman won instead of the 29 million dollar woman (Witherspoon). But was rooting for "Crash"-- yippee!

57. I got 15.
I tied for first in the pool we had at the watching party last night. I won $10. Good enough for me. :-)

58. Within one minute of the tiebreaker, got BEST PIC absolutely right
and scored 14. Brokeback was good, but Crash was best. I had that picked back in June as my movie of the year.

61. I got 9...
pfft! I will rely less on critics--had a feeling 'Crash' was going to do the 'Traffic' thing this year...same sorta low-key buzz due to the fact it came out in the Spring.

Felicity Huffman got robbed; Reese Witherspoon was basically playing herself.
