People who refuse to broaden their tastes musically
I like all types of music.

My daughter used to get disgusted with me for listening to rock music.

When I went to see "Walk the Line", I was the only black in the audience, and people looked at me like I didn't belong there.

My brothers and sisters think I'm weird for my tastes in music. They also think that I put on airs.

Fuck them.

I got my love of country music from our father, who turned me on to Johnny Cash when I was very young. The neighbors used to laugh at our father for his taste in music.

I don't like all country music. I don't like all rap music. I don't like all rap music. That's why we have choices.

I get so sick of seeing the hip hop hating threads.

If you can't broaden your mind and tastes, that's YOUR problem.

14. Quite.
Public Enemy is real. (and not gangsta)

Queen Latifah is real.

I can't believe either of them got that idiotic "parental advisory" warning, especially Latifah.

MC Hammer is a bit of a mixed bag, but he's got his moments. But the best artists, IMHO, are PE and QL.

I recall a couple of tracks from Kid'n'Play (?) from In Living Color season 1 DVD set... I'm going to look them up too.

Still, of the three only Hammer had a nasty downfall - by "selling out". Later, more and more people started selling out and didn't get the backlash.

25. Now THAT'S the hip-hop/rap that *I* like!
I really miss the days of Public Enemy, Run DMC, Africa Bambataa, Kool Moe Dee, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Salt n' Pepa, Kwame, Kid n' Play, Boogie Down Productions, KRS-1, etc., etc.

I'm going to admit right here and now, that I did like NWA, despite the fact that I don't care for the current incarnation of rap that was spawned by NWA and other groups like them. I liked them because when they came out, they were telling a truth that hadn't been told. It was musical, street anthropology. I dug it.

What I don't like is the culture and insanity that has come after them in copycat, cookie cutter mode--for the sake of sales and money. I feel it has been damaging to african american youth and the culture, not to even get into all the ills this culture commits concerning women. :puke:

Didn't really mean to go on a rant. LOL! Just wanted to say, I really miss that kind of rap. The rap that tried to teach and uplift, even the sometimes silly rap that was just about having fun (Kid and Play, Will Smith, etc.). That era seems to have come and gone, and I do miss the time when rap was about more than hustlin', pimpin', violence, hoes, bitches, etc.

Despite my personal feelings about the rap I dislike, I wouldn't advocate censoring it or abolishing. I'd love to see it go away, for the reasons I state above--but I choose to not listen to it, or I turn the channel when the videos come on tv.

Thanks for the thread Catwoman. :hi:

8. I can't help I don't like polka
:)

I grew up mostly on country and western and today my kids are often surprised at what I listen to now. It's a lot of blues, bluegrass, rock, opera and so on. I shocked the hell out of them when I bought a Ja Rule CD.

I make a point of playing a lot of different kind of music around the house. My kids love all kinds of music because of that. My daughter is a huge blues fan. She loves Aretha and Ray Charles.

10. Well taste is highly subjective
I personally do not like rap or hip-hop. I do not like jazz very much or big-band music either. or for that matter "standards"- treacly crap. But what I really, really hate is almost anything made in Nashvile- that pop-country shit sucks big time. No way is that even art. Tim McGraw can kiss my ass, even he is one of the few Democrats.

I respect the early hip hop because it's fun and I give much respect to NWA and other artists and groups like that. It's when it becomes pop that it loses its' respect. I don't like the music, but I respect their message and their effort. Personally, I'm a metal guy, does that mean I like Poison or Motley Crue, etc? No.

OK, You make a good point. Thanks for the laugh, too. He is quite a piece of work, isn't he?

Admittedly he's always been tipping the scales a bit toward crazy. LOL! But before Limp Bizkit got huge, he wasn't quite as egomaniacal, pretentious and insane as he became. I think he still was these things, and an arrogant little asshole to boot, but the characteristics were just lying dormant within, waiting for the opportunity to ruin his group and career.

I can't think of one single type of music that hasn't made me sit up and think at least a few times. Sure, there are shitty performers, but I can't think of any particular genre that doesn't has some value.

Except for Minimalism. That really sucks. The purpose of Minimalism is to make smart people say "Hey, *I* coulda done that!"

What you said about broadening musical tastes remind me of my brother and his love of Elvis.
I don't mind people who like or love Elvis' music. His beginning stuff at sun records was great and ground breaking for the time. However I am mad at people who think that Elvis is the be all and end all of music. Take my brother Doug for instance. He wont listen to anyone else but Presley. Now I know that is on the extreme end of things but I think you get my gist.

I recently started to expand my music taste. I have discovered a world of talent in Blues and Folk and yes Country music. I still wont listen to Toby Keith or Ted Nuggent mind you but that's because I don't like thier style of country or rock music that they play.

Personally while music is suggestive I think it's a shame to limit oneself to any genere. It's like readding only science fiction books. They are' great but by limiting yourself "only to sci-fi" your missing out on sword on sorcery, detective stories, comedy, as westerns. And if you really want to tick your neighbors off than try blarring some wagner opera at the top of the volume rather than Eninem.

Which brings us too rap. I get my daily share at the traffic stop waitting for the light to change.:D Seriously though I don't care for rap but that's my buisness. There are a few good rappers I like but they are few and far inbetween. See i'll admit that even in a genere I don't care for there is talent out there. I am probably just hearring a variety of rap which I don't care for. I still have no call to put others taste down however. In fact if you no of rap songs without alot of cursing(a personal preference only) please let me know. I'll gladly give it a try.

Peace everyone and hang in there, Danny.

32. I have pretty ecclectic taste too.
There are certainly genres that I don't like, but even there (rap or heavy metal, for instance), I can find an occasional song that I really like. I just know my chances of finding a great new song are better in the genres I'm most fond of (80's rock, German pop, etc.). But imagine if we all liked the same things - we could never introduce each other to something new, and that would be unfortunate.

As I've stated in other threads, I think "Pimp" is a fun song and it added a great deal to the movie.

It wasn't a "great" song. But songs nominated for Oscars generally aren't "great" songs.

But I liked it. It made me smile, hearing it the first time when watching the movie.

And everytime I've heard it since, I've smiled and thought of the movie.

He was being his usual glib self. She was very upset about the way Katrina's victims were being treated. Larry chimed in about her big donation. She went off! She said no one cares about her donation, nor should they when they can't even get a bottle of water. Then she started to cry and asked why they couldn't get any water or food. She went off about the reports of looting when people were obviously hungry and scared, etc.

She just lost it completely...I loved it! :loveya: I cried right along with her.

45. Taste is one thing...when people say "X is not music"
They are making a definition argument, and it is not one based on their personal tastes.

You will never see a "Country music is not music" thread, or a "Rock is not music" thread. Never. You will see plenty of "Hip hop is not music" threads, and therein lies the racism. The fact that hip hop is a cultural form that is very much considered music by millions of people around the world doesn't matter to these people. That's not a matter of "taste." So called "personal taste is the excuse such people give, and nothing more. You see this clearly when they say "Hell, I don't like country music either." Whether you like it is irrelevant, I would say to such people, with their laughable evasions. You denied hip hop the status of music. You don't do the same for country. And that says everything that needs to be said.

Hell, I don't like country music. Me. I don't like it, mostly. Oh wait, that's not true. I like Johnny Cash, and Willy Nelson, and Iris Dement. But I know it's music. Even if I don't like most of it, I know it is music, and takes artistry, and craft, and a keen musical sense. I know that much about it, and would not deny it that status, ever. Can these same "non-racist" douchebags who post so openly here that rap is not music say the same thing. Or will they hide, as usual, behind their so-called personal taste?

48. Very well said!
:hi: Thank you for saying it!

I'm not big on country either--but like some of those you've named and a few others, but I would never say it's not music. I don't care for a great deal of rap that's out now, but I would never say it's not music. That just not cool and does smack of bigotry on some level as far as I'm concerned.

Why?

It's not like the other two songs were anything outstanding.

C'mon of the three... "Pimp" was the best.

68. Though many don't like to admit it,
there's still a lot of (subtle and overt) racism on these boards. I think this is why some feel it's important to call others on it, when they see it. Unfortunately, many aren't even aware that is what they are doing.

As is human nature, people are prone to arguing for their weaknesses...

47. There is an artistic problem with rap.
1. Rap musicians, in general, cannot play a musical instrument.

2. Rap musicians, in general, cannot carry a tune.

3. Rap musicians, in general, write bad lyrics/poetry.

4. Rap musicians, in general, do not write "songs."

I love any style of music that exhibits some creativity.

54. Jeez
Planet Earth was my place of birth
Born to be the sole controller of the universe
Besides the part of the map I hit first
Any environment I can adapt when it gets worse
The rough gets goin the goin gets rough
When I start flowin the mic might bust
The next state'll shake from the power I generate
People in Cali used to think it was earthquakes
Cause times is hard on the boulevard
So I bogaurd and never get scared I'm god
But it seems like I'm locked in hell
Lookin over the edge but the R never fell
Or tripped or slipped cause my Nikes got grip
I stand on my own two feet and come equipped
Any stage I'm seen on the mic I fiend on
I stand alone and need nothin to lean on
Goin for self with a long way to go
So much to say but I still flow slow
I come correct and I won't look back
Cause it aint where you from it's where you at
Even the Ghetto

I learn to relax in my room and escape from New York
Take a trip through the womb of the world as a thought
Thinkin how hard it was to be born
Me being cream with no physical form
Millions of cells with one destination
To reach the best part that's life's creation
Nine months later a job well done
Make way cause here I come
Since I made it this far can't stop now
There's a will and a way and I got the know-how
To be all there is to be and more
To see all there is to see before
I'm called to go back to the essence
It's a lot to learn so I studied my lessons
I thought the ghetto was the worst that could happen to me
I'm glad I listened when my father was rapping to me
Cause back in the days they lived in caves
Exiled from the original man and strayed away
Now that's what I call hard times
I'd rather be here to exercise the mind
Then I take a thought around the world twice
From knowledge the form back to knowledge precise
Across the desert that's hot as the Arabian
But they couldn't cave me in cause I'm the Asian
Reaching for the city of Mecca visit Medina
Visions of Nefertiti then I seen her
Mind keeps travelin I'll be back after I
Stop and think about the brothers and sisters in Africa
Return the thought through the eye of a needle
For miles I fought and I just fought the people
Under the darks skies on a dark side
Not only there but right here's an aparthied
So now is the time for us to react
Take a trip through the mind and when you get back
Understand your third eye seen all of that
It aint where you from it's where you at
Even the Ghetto

No more props I want property in every Burrough
Nobody's stoppin me because I'm thorough
Rhymes I make give me real estate for me to own
Where ever I bless a microphone
Double O seven is back and relaxin
On point and reactin and ready for action
I'm so low key that you might not see me
Incognito and takin it easy
Quiet is kept on the hush hush
In front of a crowd I get loud
There's a bum rush
But calm keep a low pro and play the background
Hoping the wack rappers put the mic back down
So rip it break it in half go ahead and slam it
Cause when it's time to build I'm a mechanic
I'm bondin and mendin attachin and blendin
So many solos there is no ending
People in my neighborhood they know I'm good
From London to Hollywood where ever I stood
Footprints remain on stage ever since
Sidewalks and streets I leave fossils and dents
When I had sex I left my name on necks
My Trademark was left throughout the projects
I used to get rich when I played c-lo
When I rolled 4,5,6 they go we know
So I collect my cash then slide
I got my back my gun's on my side
It shouldn't have to be like that
I guess it aint where you from it's where you at
Even the Ghetto

-Rakim, In the Ghetto

Also the author of such uncreative lyrics as

The only time I stop is when
Somebody drop and then
Bring em to the front
Cuz my rhyme's the oxygen

No, nothing very creative about that rhymne scheme....:eyes:

The scheme itself is a marvel of assonance, alternating a short "i" and short "o" sound on and on and on. It's quite frankly astounding from the perspective of poetics. That he manages to actually make a point in the midst of this verbal wizardry is only more impressive. Let's see Floogeldy come up with even two lines of comparable skill.

82. That's my point in post 45
I'm not a big fan of country music, but I know enough to know that it is amazing at its best, and requires incredible talent. One need not be a fan to recognize that much. But when it comes to rap, people deny it even that, and then hide behind the fact that they are not fans. It's racism, pure and simple, to deny to rap its musical quality. And, as I said, you never see the same thing said of other music. Hell, I don't like death metal, but I know that at its best, it requires musical talent and creativity, and is an art form. That others find it so hard to say the same about rap is only a symptom of a deeper problem.

You haven't made one. You haven't bothered to cite examples. You've merely made generalities and sweeping statements that you seem to smugly believe have to be true because you think they are. :eyes:

I see, it can't exist because you haven't seen it. Riiiight. Your world view of music is spot on accurate, because...you say so.

Yes, of course that will hold up well in any court.

It's also interesting that you've been so insistent and hounded one that clearly stated they are not a big rap fan. Several others on the thread have said they are...why wouldn't you ask them, if you cared or were sincerely interested? I don't think you do. I feel that you just like to argue things that have no point. I could be wrong, but that's the vibe I get of you... :boring:

It seems to me, this challenge is about you being right in your own mind. It has nothing to do with the facts. It seems some silly game you want to play. As if saying that you "rest your case" or are right is somehow sufficient to push or bully me into doing research for you. Or in admitting that you are right. :eyes: Don't you have anything better to do?

Some examples:

The Roots. A rap band. Here's a shocker, they are called a rap band because they play instruments! :wow: They have back-up singers. Sometimes they sing, sometimes they rap. Their percussionist is one of the best in the business. He's played with other groups on awards shows, including rock groups. Again, shocking. A guy from a rap group plays an instrument well enough that a rock group wanted him to play with them. :eyes:

Ever hear of The Fugees? Of course not. Look them up.

Lauren Hill was in the Fugees. She's a fantastic singer. She happens to play guitar and piano. She produced her first solo project, which was critically acclaimed and won ridiculous amounts of Grammy's. Yes, she also raps. I challenge you to find someone that thinks she doesn't have a fantastic singing voice.

Wyclef Jean from the Fugees, also started as a rapper. He plays guitar and sings. He has a good enough singing voice that his album was Grammy nominated. He produces albums for other artists. Know anything about the production process? I would think it demands one knows something about music...he does lots of that. Look him up, if you care or dare.

Queen Latifah. Started as a rapper. She sings quite well. Sang in the film Chicago, released an album of jazz standards to critical acclaim and a Grammy nomination. She's been invited to sing for the Oscars, the Emmys and the Grammy's. She sang at the Oscars with Catherine Zeta Jones as well as with Burt Bacharach.

Will Smith Grammy award winning rapper, plays piano. Also has a genius level iq and was admitted to MIT right out of highschool.

Jamie Fox, rapper and sings quite well. Well enough that NBC gave him a show featuring his singing. He's also sung at the Grammys and MTV awards shows, playing the piano and singing with Alicia Keys.

The guy that did much of the score for Quentin Tarantino's film Kill Bill, was part of Wu Tang Clan, a rap group. He is known as a rapper, his monkier is The RZA. But he produced the score, Quentin asked him to do so. I would think such a job would require one to have knowledge of music and instruments, and oh yes to even be creative.... :eyes:

Oh, but you're right of course--I couldn't even name one... :eyes: :boring:

:sarcasm:

Your 'analysis:'

Not musicians: not required to be "music."

not singers: not required to be "music."

not writers: not required to be "music."

bad poetry: opinion

'Music' takes on many forms...is Enya not "musical" because she doesn't always sing and create "bad poetry?"

So, here is some education: "Rap MUSIC:" IS "The art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre."

WTF does race have to do with it? Rock was invented by black folk too and that exact sentiment you expressed was used to put it down back in the 50's.

It's all music people. No one is insisting you like it or listen to it. But to say it isn't music is culturally ignorant.

There is music produced in the pacific islands that doesn't have a lot of melody.

Why, those silly asians only used five notes when everyone knows we should have 8, or 12, or maybe even those crazy-ass indians with 22 or 23 depending on the time of day and what the hell is harmony anyway?

69. History was made tonight at the Oscars. Rap won.
I cheered. The movie Hustle and Flow was incredible and the scene where the music came together was powerful. The song should have won and I'm glad it did.

It's winning also slapped mainstream America across the face - and that too was a beautiful thing. Sometimes, it's the only way to open doors in society - to smack down barriers as hard as you can.
People cheered Clooney's remarks about being the "first" and "out of the loop" well...that tradition was continued tonight. Hollywood honored Rap with an Oscar. Yeah, Grammy's are nice - but it's not an Oscar.

I love Johnny Cash and I grew up listening to the Carter family. :)

89. Yes. That song was a core part of the movie.
The look on that woman's face when she first hears HER voice played back to her was IT.

It's not the "greatest" song this year.

It's not the truest example of Rap.

But it made that movie.

And to me that is what a best Oscar song should do.

AND it was better --hands down-- than either of the other two nominated songs.

been a fan for damn near 30 years - and it's been around longer than most people realize. It's evolved, adapted and incorportated many other styles...I think the movie version is less of a rap song - more funk - in the movie...

I agree - the song did everything a best Oscar song should do..defintely the best of the nominated (hands down)

so they could see the song in it's proper context.

I *hope* it's because they didn't see the movie.

The movie was one of empowerment. I was dazzled - made dizzy - and I cheered the characters.

I was hooked from the first line. "Ya see.. A Man's not like a dog"

It was about people finding themselves and following their dream.

our lovely President divided us that way. When I was up in Idaho all the girls loved Garth Brooks, so I had to listen to his music over and over and started to like it. There is a particular song that reminded me of the place when I wasn't there, "Thunder Road" I think was the name of it. I think old Garthy though is a bit of a liberal.

85. I agree. Especially when you consider how much older music
is sampled in newer songs.

I was simply delighted to see the rap song win tonight's Best Song at the Oscars. It was simply the song that fit it's movie the best. And to see the passion of the performance and the joy of the winners compared to others who accepted the highest award you can get for film work, it was great.

You have to listen to all kinds of music to realize just how interconnected they really are, how much they've evolved from one another and how much they compliment one another.

With that having been said, I really hate the country shit out there now. Toby Keith??? :puke:

It's interesting that artists like the Beatles revered blues artists, Woody Nelson was very good friends with Ray Charles, my memory is failing me but I know there are other examples. But music experts on an internet board find no value in music created by urban artists. Yes, I called them artists.

155. "music experts on an internet board find no value in music created by ...
urban artists"

Which is rather unfortunate. The music coming from urban artists today provides a glimpse of what life is really like on the streets of an urban city. So-called "experts" choose to ignore it because if they listened or paid close attention, they'd be forced to admit that there are real problems out there that need immediate attention. It's easier to ignore.

I'm open minded and definitely don't subscribe to music snobbery and the "there's no good music anymore" mentality. I tried giving hip-hop a chance, but I just like traditional singing a lot more. I can tolerate Eminem and Kanye West. Also, death metal is just too noisy for me.

But my CD collection has variety: Brie Larson, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, The Bangles, Loretta Lynn, Garth Brooks, Madonna, Aaliyah, Steve Earle, Avril Lavigne, Frank Sinatra, The Corrs, New Pornographers, Loreena McKennitt, Pearl Jam, Luther Vandross, Garbage, Radiohead, and Sufjan Stevens are all in it.

Hi, CatWoman!

Hear the lonesome whippoorwill
His song's too blue to fly
The midnight train is a-winding low
I'm so lonesome I could cry

I've never seen a night so long
When time keeps crawling by
The moon is gone behind the clouds
To hide his face and cry

Have you ever seen a robin weep
When leaves have turned to brown?
Like me he's lost his will to live
I'm so lonesome I could cry

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple haze
and as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry

144. Depends what you mean by "refuse to broaden their tastes".
I'm not about to start listening to hip-hop - but I've got nothing against it.

By virtue of listening to classical music I've already got a far broader base than most folk. But even within classical music there's a vast array of stuff I don't like - but I realise the difference between "I don't like" and "not good". I really don't like hip-hop, but I'm certainly not about to say that it's all rubbish, still less call for its demise.

151. We Agree But Disagree At The Same Time, Cat.
I don't hate country or rap (to use your examples). But, they also don't do anything for me. So, i don't feel any obligation to "broaden my horizons" by listening to music i don't care about.

I don't see the bashing aspects as productive, a point on which we agree. Even if one doesn't like it, it doesn't require putting down a genre or those who do! But, i think country is too rhythmically static, new country is too derivative of classic and 80's rock, and i, interestingly, think far too much rap music lacks rhythm and feel. So, those styles leave me cold. I don't think i would be broadening my tastes to listen to music that i already find lacking, and for sound musical reasons.

I will stick to jazz and rock, thanks.
The Professor

Edited to add that those lyrics were originally written by Trent Reznor of 9 Inch Nails.

He got pissed at Johnny for doing his song until he heard what a great job JC did.

165. I wasn't very impressed by his voice.
I liked the first verse, though.

By Al Green. That was my comfort.

Are you close to somebody that sounds like JC?

169. It's good to keep an open mind
I'll confess there are a lot of different kinds of music which bore me (generally stuff that is completely vocal-centric turns me off), what bums me out is when people throw out a completely subjective statemtn about "feel" or "art."

Has anybody heard somebody claim that they only like music which lacks all feeling? If it doesn't float your boat, it doesn't float your boat--no point gettin' cranky--just move on.

It's actually pretty easy to avoid stuff that bothers you these days--satelite radio, ipods etc, it like the old days when you HAD to listen to whatever was popular.

I'll take a little Hardanger fiddle now, if you please! :D

Please check out his last few albums produced by Rick Rubens, they are amazing.
There is great music in all genres and there is crap in all genres.

175. Best thread today!!!
My upbringing was similar to yours in many ways. My parents divorced when I was four, and both had very different tastes in music.

Dad was a country boy, and got me to appreciate Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Creedence Clearwater Revival. My mom, OTOH, listened to a lot of soul music, and was a big fan of the Commodores and Earth, Wind & Fire.

Nowdays, I listen to all the above, plus jazz, some hip-hop, some indy-rock, and a lot of flamenco, too.

Music comes in all different flavors, like ice cream. And I enjoy all of it.

Except for Ted Nugent-- he eats ass. :P

177. Can I vent about something?
Edited on Mon Mar-06-06 01:21 PM by CBHagman
I have a friend who more or less automatically dismisses any cello soloist who isn't Yo Yo Ma and any violin soloist who isn't Itzhak Perlman. In his eyes, a classical recording is top-notch if it has one of those two performers, no one else. No Janos Starker or Lynn Harrell or Jacqueline Du Pre, and no Gil Shaham or Nathan Milstein or Jascha Heifetz. This drives me INSANE, considering that there are literally thousands of recordings by great violinists and cellists, past and present. It's the musical equivalent of saying that frying is the only way to prepare chicken, or that apples are the only fruit. :grr:

180. True!
Each musician brings a unique interpretation. I might like it or not like it - but if they have any skill at all, the music evolves, changes, mutates, offers something new.

My favourite classical piece is Beethoven's Ninth (yeah could I be more stereotypical?) but each time I hear it played by a different orchestra it's a new piece.

Khash.

He said he got turned on to Hank Williams by John Lee Hooker. Genre means nothing. To me, authenticity does.
