"Equus"?? "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"? Both were great performances that should have been recognized.

45. Totally. He was only nominated once, for "The Story of G.I. Joe". Might
have been his cavalier attitude (he refused to pontificate about acting) or his serving time for marijuana possession that killed his chances.

Two fine actors nominated (Grant twice and Dunne five times) but never won.

And I agree about Peter O'Toole - also Angela Lansbury, Mary Tyler Moore, and Thelma Ritter.

46. Adrian.
From Wikipedia:

Adrian Adolph Greenberg (March 3, 1903 – September 13, 1959) was a Hollywood costume designer whose most famous costumes were for The Wizard of Oz and other Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer films of the 1930s and 1940s. On occasion, he was credited in his film work as Gilbert Adrian, (a combination of his father's forename and his own), or simply as Adrian.

An example of his work:

You didn't say it had to be an actor.

48. The first Award for Costume Design was made in 1949.
That was for films made in 1948, and the winners were:

For Best Costume Design (Colour): Joan of Arc (Dorothy Jeakins/Barbara Karinska)

Best Costume Design (Black & White): Hamlet (Roger Furse)

What a pity they didn't have them in earlier years, because Adrian was surely the greatest ever.

47. Orson Welles.
I believe pressure from Hearst made sure he didn't win for Citizen Kane.

Alfred Hitchcock - Honorary Awards don't count - they really mean "you should have won, but somehow
we forgot."

Cary Grant
Leslie Howard
Richard Burton
and Paul Newman should have a long time before he finally did.

Deborah Kerr
Agnes Moorehead

Akira Kurosawa
Ingmar Bergman (can't believe it!)
Richard Brooks
