About a hundred years ago, some college kids pulled a dandy joke on Carrie Nation, the saloon-smashing anti-booze nutcase.

They fooled her into believing their fraternity was anti-booze, and she posed with them for a photograph.

But when the picture was taken, the frat boys pulled booze bottles, wine glasses, etc, out of their pockets so it looked like they were having a high old time with Carrie Nation.

The prank was a hit around the country, but Carrie Nation's comments weren't recorded.

So probably these two college kids convinced publicity-hound Phelps they were sincere, and then when the colluding photographer took the picture, the kids opened their jackets. :D

22. Not a photoshop--this was my college!

Fred Phelps came to Nashville to protest the city considering giving GLBT people job discrimination protection. This would've been in like 2002. A big group of kids from my college showed up to counter-protest Phelps so a few months later he came to Nashville again to specifically protest Vanderbilt!

These two fellows from my dorm pulled his prank on Phelps--they had a third friend take their picture and opened their jackets at the opportune time. Phelps never even noticed! }(

These guys are long graduated now, as am I, but it's hilarious to see them live on in internet infamy!

I don't suppose one has to believe me but I was at college when this happened. They just had the message written on their shirts and opened their jackets at the right time. Phelps is not exactly Mr. Lucid! These two guys lived in my dorm and took the picture for the humor publication on campus (this was at Vanderbilt University in Nashville about four years ago). :D
