2. It's an insidious menace rotting us from within.
I started watching this season and I can't tell you why. It'll be cable news next.

3. I had the same problem with the first Survivor
even made some bad parody fan art/music, too. After the second season, I lost all interest in it.

There's gotta be a cure somewhere

5. You know what this country needs? American Poet.
I would love to see that. Emily Dickinson going out there to read for the judges...

RANDY: Yo, Emily D, wassup? You know, I really like the whole elliptical thing where it's like, you almost know what you're talkin' about but not really. I think that's cool. I mean I dunno if America is gonna go for it, but you know, you came out and you did your thing, Emily, you're all right.

PAULA: Emily, you really have your own style, and I don't know what you're talking about but I think it's beautiful and you have such charisma and I just love everything about it.

SIMON: My problem is...well, to be frank, the meter's always the same, isn't it. "Because I could not stop for death he kindly stopped for me..." I mean in the end it all sounds like "The Yellow Rose of Texas," doesn't it?

RYAN: After the break: Edgar Allen Poe's gonna read his poem "The Bells!"

12. ...

Yeah, I could just SEE Emily Dickinson up there. Simon would probably insult her wardrobe, too.

9. awwww, I wouldn't take it that seriously.
minus the sadism, it's a venue for talented ordinary people, some ugly, some with large posteriors, to sing to 40-50 million people live every week and have a shot at fame.

personally, I spend much of my free time stressed out and upset about all the horridness the B*sh era has brought... even depressed. So, what's wrong with getting away from it all a few hours a week with some mindless entertainment? I sure don't feel guilty about it.

6. ah well, i suppose you cannot respect me now!
I have been watching since season 1- my husband tolerates it. It's a talent show, and doesn't pretend to be more than that. i like it because ugly people with talent can circumvent the usual path to success that elevates a jessica Simpson or Britney Spears, etc. but doesn't give a female with a huge ass but great talent a second look.

Say what you will... if the winners can eventually extricate themselves from their contracts with American idol, they can produce and do the music they want and not pop-crap!

I would just try it next week, to see what it's about. I am probably the only person left who has not seen Star Wars!

8. You're right. I can't.
Kidding, of course

I'm sure you have many redeeming qualities :P

As for American Idol circumventing the Britney Spearses and Jessica Simpsons of the world, I would argue that American Idol circumvents having to pay your dues.

Moreover, if the winners can extricate themselves, do the music they want, and not produce pop-crap, how come every single winner has produced nothing but pop-crap?

Also, I'd point out that, despite your claim that American Idol allows ugly women to get a recording contract, I don't believe an ugly woman has ever won the show.

American Idol is a soulless concoction of the record industry that further commodifies and brands what should be an art form, not a goddamn product. In an age when, through everything from the Napster revolution of a few years ago to the current iPod, we are so close to shattering the boundaries the record industry has erected around music -- the everything-sounds-alike demands of an industry bent on making hit records, not good music -- American Idol is a disappointed, agonizing step backward.

OK, I'll get off my soapbox now.

11. Don't be so sure-- that I have any redeeming qualities!
tee hee

I do respect your opinion, and now even feel a little shame; I'm sewing a scarlet "AI" to my frock right now!

You've made good points, but don't agree w/all. (BTW- the most touted female contestant has an ENORMOUS arse... the size of three football fields. And a golf course!)

Ah well: to each his/her own! Let me know if your EVER do bring yourself to watch it.

regards.

10. No. The only American Idol I've seen is clips on commercials.
Even if I had an interest, and I don't, I refuse to watch anything with Ryan Seacrest in it.

4. Ooooh! I was just going to post about this! I htought she was RUDE...
these folks take the compettion very seriously.... for most it will probably be the most memorable moment of their lives... it was really stupid and insensitive of her to make inane jokes as they found out they were getting the boot. very disrespectful. It shows the show has made her jaded. She used to be kinder.

I don't think she was drunk or high. But then, who knows. Glad my man (grey heaired guy) made it through, and that bald rocker is a hot singer. Not crazy about Ace, but he will go far because of his looks. Among ladies, I like Paris. There's another girl who sings very well, but she doesn't appear to be the nicest person- but hell, who knows.

15. Vicoden or Oxy -- I'll bet on it
The worst she's ever been. Unprofessional and rude to the contestants, and not in a Simon way. She needs her ass fired ASAP.

19. Judge for yourself
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pawMsDTf9ms&eurl=

From "The Superficial.com"
"apparently Paula Abdul was less than coherent during last night's show. The video above is of Ryan Seacrest asking Paula why two contestants received the fewest votes and her responding, "Simon said because one of them ate pizza and the other one ate salad."

And then later in the show, she continued with her insanity, saying: "What did you tell me Simon? What did you tell me? Simon gave me advice and said on 'The X Factor' he always refers to a fortune cookie and says the moth who finds the melon - (laughter) - finds the corn flake always finds the melon and one of you didn’t pick the right fortune."

21. The show's star has changed from Simon (villain) to Paula (train wreck)
Edited on Fri Mar-03-06 09:04 PM by bob_weaver
This change took place during season 4 (last year) when Paula and her alternative states of consicousness and diction became the focus of the show, robbing the spotlight from both Simon and the contestants themselves. They must have seen the ratings slip a little so they slipped a little something into her Coke cup last night.

22. Someone mentioned her name should be Paula O'Doul's because
she's always drunk or high on pain killers. Last night's show was disgusting to watch. None of them acted professional and I would make every one of them apologize to the contestants, apologize to America for their behavior, and try to get some credibility back on the show. As far as I'm concerned, this is going to be the last season the way they are acting, no one wants to watch kids be ridiculed by petty, immature, f'k up adults. Paula should be fired over it, she was inappropriate and if I had kids watching the show, I would be outraged. Even when they all sang their last songs, the panel was over there cutting up, ignoring them and talking among themselves. It was a complete embarrassment and I'll watch one more time to see if they apologize, if they don't, I'm finished with the fu'k up show.
