If someone is, for example, a completely inexcusable fucking douche-whistle, it's MY fault for failing to see the obvious comedic gold shining through.

I wish I'd known these simple social rules before - to think, all these years I could have been clownin' it up with bigoted assweeds!

meanwhile others are already that way but they are just too condescending and self-righteous to know it. Nor do they really care. Simple social rules notwithstanding.

18. ok
This one and I am part of another collection called Studies In American Indian Literature which will be coming out later this year, my essay in that has been taught at Indian Studies seminars at the University of Arizona. Plus, I have a few essays out in a couple different magazines and papers and have done some film writing and other film work. I was replying to being told I haven't earned the right to essentially write what I want, whether somebody finds it offensive or not. I don't care if anybody gives me a free pass or not, people react how they react. That's their right to do so. I probably was condescending, you were too. You pushed my buttons the way nobody else really could, because I take a lot of credence in what you say, I was probably being a legitimate jerk in my reply. Now that I am genuinely sorry for. Other than that, I write bizarre things, because I use them for different ideas. I have pages of different things, sort of similar to what I just did. I incorporate that into character development. Like tonight, I was watching George Carlin (I've done stand up before, years ago, btw) and I started writing down some of the things I posted. Do I necessarily believe them. No. Not really. The only thing I wrote that was true is I am not a fan of Brendan Fraser and I am obsessive compulsive about monkeys. The thing is, I never specifically attack a person, nor do I specifically belittle a person's belief. I will write general things that doesn't necessarily apply to anyone. That isn't something I could ever comfortably do. But is the rest of it over the top? Definitely. Could it be offensive? I am sure it could. I like to gauge reactions. If I go too far for people on DU, I never include that in something I would actually use. If somebody takes it personally, I always apologize, because that is not my intention. Does that clear it up somewhat for you?

12. what is patently offensive?
and who has the patent?

Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy told jokes peppered with the word motherfu$%er. Sometimes it even seemed like that word was the entire punchline. Some people find that offensive. Others find the same joke hilarious.

Sam Kinison - funny, or irreverent and homophobic?
Andrew Dice Clay - funny or misogynistic and crude?

Amateurs will probably push the boundaries even more. But I think it is best to be prepared, just in case a joke, or attempt at a joke, is a) taken the wrong way, or b) distinctly not funny. :hide:

And yet in reality I sound like a less funny Sam Kinison/Andrew Dice Clay hybrid.

I have opinions, and they are bigoted and sexist, but it's okay because I admit I'm being "politically incorrect." See? It's about the humor!

if a douche-whistle makes a joke and you don't find its funny, don't laugh...theres no need to create a whole thread about it, thats a bit douche-whistley in its own right.

31. Am I the only one who doesn't find it very hard to apologize if I fuck up?
Actually, I know I'm not. But there seem to be an AWFUL lot of people (all around, not just at DU) who would rather make excuses.

For example, if I say something that a black person finds offensive, it is NOT my business to judge whether that person is overreacting or not - because I'm not black. Therefore, I'll apologize. And not think twice about doing so, and not look for an excuse.

Just my opinion, is all.

it's getting others to accept it that is hard.

Apologizing is like fighting a badger, it sucks and hurts but sometimes it just has to be done. :)

Edited on Thu Mar-02-06 01:05 PM by Misunderestimator
"I realize that what I said was highly offensive, and I'm sorry I said it"... One is empty, the other is real.

Reminds me of the time an asshole overheard me saying "What a fucking asshole." When he demanded an apology from me, I said "I'm sorry you overheard me calling you a fucking asshole." That was an empty apology... intentionally.

38. But you don't ever apologize or understand really how it is offensive
to say offensive things about women. Saying that a lower back tattoo on a woman is a bullseye for a penis, and that she is a whore, is offensive. Doesn't matter if you pretend that you were joking or playing a character. That genuinely bothers ME.

40. Its easy to apologize when you fuck up
but just because someone wants an apology doesn't always mean one is warranted. Some jokes offend, if you're offended thats your right, but don't expect an apology.
