Hey Boston, we need a get-together
It's been too long, and (unlikely as that seems today) spring is just around the corner.

What I would like to propose is Cafe Belo in Somerville, just outside of Union Square. They serve Brazilian cuisine, specifically the barbecue stuff called churrasco, plus a bunch of other stuff. (One of the questionable charms of the Brazilian attitude is that they seem to think they either invented or perfected many things, so they claim that things like lasagna and kibbee are native.) There's a reasonably full bar-- I don't know about the wine list (I'll find out) but there are mixed drinks, including the Brazilian tradition called caipirinha (sugar cane brandy and lime, tastes exactly like the beach in Rio). There are also native Brazilian fruit juices, maracuja (what we call passionfruit) and caju (the fruit that produces the nut we call cashew), and the carbonated beverage called guarana-- and of course good coffee. And since Brazil is a good time culture, they're used to people hanging out. (If we do do this we will warn them.)

We could certainly do the People's Republik again. The only reason I don't want to do that is, I want to bring a guitar and show off, and People's Republik is too noisy.

9. Not even that will work. Christ, woman, it's been ten years and I just
started playing again two weeks ago! Waddaya expect, miracles?

It was kind of depressing last night when Mrs R dug up one of my old demo tapes and played it...it's going to be a LONG damn time until I can play in public again. Christ, I was good back then, though! (Good entertainer, not great guitar player, just to set the record straight. If I ever transfer the old tapes to a CD, I'll give you a copy. I was a hilarious son of a bitch on stage doing Irish music in bars.)

"Waddaya expect, miracles?" From you? Of course. :)

I would love to hear you on stage. I'll just bit that you on stage doing Irish music would be well worth the listen *grin* I'm sorry about the frustration, and I feel ya. I look back on the music I used to be able to play, and to sing, and what I've lost makes me sad, as well.

6. Cool
There will be a guitar there, if you change your mind. (I might even change the strings by then.)

Actually they have a stage, and on weekend nights they generally have live performances. If and when we set a date I'm going to arrange to take over that stage for a (mercifully short) set.

26. Yay!
It will be delightful to see you guys.

Now we have to agree on the date. I suggest March 18th-- the weather should warm up by then, plus it works with LynzM's schedule, and it gives the hardcore St. Paddy's Day celebrants some hair of the dog opportunities. And being it's a Sunday, the genuine Brazilians might not out-raucous us. (Unless of course there's a good futbol game on. I may have to research that.)

BTW, the food is quite amazing at Cafe Belo, and I don't know of any better value for money. It's a buffet style thing that's quite common in Brazil itself but that you don't often see north of the Mason-Dixon line. You get a plate and pile food on it, and then pay based on the weight of whatever's on your plate. There's a counter of hot foods (roasted and/or stewed meat and fish, rice and beans (usually including feijoado, a pork and beans melange that's the national dish), pasta, veggies, little croquette things, etc.) and another counter of stuff on ice (fresh fruit, salad fixins, and stuff like salpicao, a popular Brazilian chicken salad with potato sticks for crunchiness), and then there's the churrasco itself, a huge rotisserie grill with a couple dozen skewers loaded to the gunwales with MEAT! (Your PETA acquaintances will be outraged, so maybe we shouldn't bring 'em.) And baked goods, savory (pao de queiju, or cheese bread, little bite-size rolls of tapioca dough flavored with parmesan) and sweet (flan and other ridiculously honeyed or syruped puddings, plus cakes full of fruity goodness). These folks love to cook, and to eat.

I was offline most of yesterday.

Anyway, for those of you with an interest in this thread:

(1) Does the weekend of the 18th/19th work for everybody?

(2) If the answer to question #1 is yes, do you prefer Saturday (18th) or Sunday (19th)? (And apologies for my inability to read the calendar correctly  )

(3) Should I restart this thread in the Masshole state forum?

Just two questions:

1) Did you check for the owner's name at OpenSecrets.org to see if they donate to Dems or Repugs?
2) Did you check for the owner's name on KnowThyNeighbor.org to see if they signed the anti-gay petition?

36. Good question
I haven't done so, because I don't know the owner's name!

Instead of doing my own due diligence, I'm assuming there are no political skeletons in their closet, because the person who turned me on to the place is the dude that more or less runs the Center for Marxist Education in Central Square, and probably the best connected lefty I know. (Felix Arroyo came to his birthday party.)

Of course he could just be heightening the contradictions, or however that Naderite phrase goes. Or he could simply go there just because his significant other is Brazilian and really likes it.

"This is part of a small chain of brazilian restaurants. Don't expect a sit down restaurant. You basically go through a buffet line and pay for your food by weight. This mostly a lot of meat. Some was okay, but most meat was dry and the rest of the food was pretty oily. It's a pretty heavy meal. When we went, there was only one other family there, but it's a pretty big place, so maybe they do more business usually. You can try exotic juices here like cashewnut juice which tastes strangely like cashews."

38. Thank you
No idea why the Somerville outlet is spelled "Ballo" in the Boston Entertainment Guide. That's wrong.

There were a dozen or so shops in the chain at peak, including *two* in Allston (big Brazilian community), one in Kenmore Square, and others as far afield as Danbury, CT. But several of them have closed, including Kenmore and one of the Allston restaurants. Meanwhile other churrascarias have opened up in various places-- there's now quite a good one half a dozen blocks from my house in Somerville. (The Somerville Brazilian community is growing rapidly. Used to be that anyone who spoke Portuguese here was either from Portugal or Cape Verde; now the Brazilians outnumber them.)

The review posted above is too negative, I think-- at least, while I agree the food can be heavy, I don't find it oily. (I find it salty, but left to my own devices, I never salt anything.)

We just got back from there, actually, to see if they had a preference. Either day is good with them, and they don't think there are any really important soccer games that will bring out their usual crowds. They think they can accommodate us without difficulty.

We also asked about their drinks. They have a bar with some Brazilian beers and wines. The beers are good enough, nothing special. The wines are varietals: a cabernet sauvignon, a merlot, a chardonnay (the only white-- sorry, Stellanoir) and a sweet wine equivalent to a sherry. That last apparently gets substituted for the cachaca (sugar cane brandy) in an alternative version of the caipirinha.

And they had a good feijoado today. That's a mess of black beans simmered with bits of beef and pork and linguica and whatever else.

Okay, reviewing the early voting, I see one clear preference for Saturday (LynzM), one lukewarm preference for Saturday (Miss Millie), and one clear preference for Sunday (PureVidaDreamin).

That's not a lot of opinions on which to base a decision. Too many chads are still hanging.

55. Seeing as I don't check too often
I'm glad I found the thread before the date passed by!

Either day is good for me, so I'm afraid I'm not much help in that respect. Location is open for me as well. And time is better for me during the afternoon, as I have some problems with night vision and driving after dark. (Yes, I'm an old lady!) Is the place accessible by T? If it is, I can park at Riverside, but if it's not, I'll get directions.

That's the soonest I can get there, where ever there is. Where is this going to be?

I'm still looking for strong opinions on which day we should convene.

For those of you coming by T, there are a couple options, neither very good. There are buses from Lechmere (green line) that go up the McGrath Highway far enough that you can hop off under that big overpass that brushes by Union Square, Somerville. You get off there and walk up Washington Street, under the railroad trestle, and Cafe Belo is right there on the right. Or you can make it to Sullivan (orange line) and trudge down Washington Street from there. I thought there was a bus that ran that way, but now I can't find it on the MBTA web site.

If I have the car that day (whichever day it is) I'll try and arrange to give some people rides. But that's a big if: Mrs. Squeech has a day job out in the 'burbs and she tends to need the car to get there.

66. If Saturday, can we please please please listen to WPitt?
They got them some GOOD 'roni & cheese(s) with andouille & stuff at Bukowski's.

Helluva good bar, even though Bukowski's books are utterly unreadable.

The 86, 91 and CT2 all pass by it. If taking the bus just ask the driver to let you off by Cobble Hill. It's to the right of the little plaza with a few restaurants and stores.

Also it's pretty easy to walk to from Sullivan. After exiting the train station turn right and take a right on Washington St. In about five minutes you'll see it on the left side of the street. It's a brick building with a blue sign.

I usually get a slow start the day after St Patricks Day and I am hoping to attend South Boston Parade Day at the fights on Sunday. It could be a long weekend

Since it was my idea, I feel obligated to be their early: I expect to show up at 2PM. I'll stay as long as I have energy-- assuming I don't eat myself into a coma, which is a distinct possibility.

74. awwwww shucks
A family party honoring my favorite cousin's 40 th birthday tonight coupled with my most unfortunate oil leak, my son's unexpected avoidance of his dad this weekend, and squeech's failure to respond to my e-mail. . . hurrrrrumphhhh. . . .kidding. . .you told me before of your problems with your inbox, are all contributing to more than a modicum of trepidation. I can't make it but will be with you in spirit.

Have a blast you guys. I send great fondness to all of you and I'll shoot for April Fool's at Bukowski's. Creatrix willing.
