Do you remember your very first bank account?
I just got back from signing up my 12 yr old son with his very first savings account at our local bank, with some leftover birthday money he had and some allowance money. He's all stoked cuz he'll be getting his own ATM card. He put in a whopping $35 initial deposit. :woohoo:

Amusingly, this particular bank calls this type of savings account, for their banking clients under the age of 18 yrs old, a "Moola Moola Account". How funny is that?

It felt almost like a rite of passage of sorts, ushering him into the wonderful wacky world of banking. It brought back memories of my own first account around his age....

Do you remember your very first bank account?? Did you save regularly? How old were you when you first got it?

1. Yes
It was at the Toronto Dominion Bank. I was around 10 or 11.

No computers; everything was done by hand. On papyrus, I believe. ;-)

25. I remember the first ATM machine
I ever used. It was the mid-80's, at a bank ironically called 'The Permanent'.

'The Permanent' was soon taken over by Canada Trust.

7. Checking or savings?
I had a savings account when I was... 7? My folks set it up, o' course, and I doubt I ever had more than $20 in it. But it was fun, and it taught me a little about saving money.

My sister and I also had those coin banks where you'd drop in the money and it would roll down a couple of rails and drop into the appropriate tube, and you could see how much you had. (My folks were really into saving money and teaching us to do so.)

I got my first checking account when I was 12 and started my paper route. Five years later, I'd just hung up my bags and had enough money to put a new engine in my car.

When I was 13, I wrote a check for 95 cents to a Boy Scout who was selling fireworks. When I gave it to him, he said, "What's this?"

8. It could be either, actually. I liked your stories, btw. Paper route, cool
I had my first savings acct. much earlier than I did my first checking acct.

I didn't get a checking acct til I left home for college at 18. I remember feeling like I'd REALLY joined the leagues of "adults" then! (little did I know....)

Do you remember seeing that tshirt that said: "I CAN'T BE OVERDRAWN, I STILL HAVE CHECKS LEFT!"

yeah, that was about right for me during several of those college years.... :eyes:

9. I felt pretty 'adult' with mine, too
And having a steady income at 12... well, that just rocked. Didn't get an allowance because I didn't need it. I felt indePENdent.

'Course, it was only like $30 a month, but to a 12-year-old kid in the late '60s, that's some pretty decent cash.

14. I have had the same checking account for 27 years
(I dropped it a few times and have others as well, but the account number remains the same) The bank itself has changed hands 3 times.

Got it originally when I started college. My family has been banking there for 3 generations.

Savings? heh heh yeah, well

16. Yes, I do...
my Aunt who is now deceased and lived with us from the time she was 2 years old opened a savings account for me...she died at age 36 of cancer. She was like a big sister to me...she would change my bedding at night when I would wet the bed and wash it before my parents would awake...she named her first daughter after me...when she married a man of different color, her brother, my father, disowned her...I was devestated that she was not allowed in my life any longer...it has had a profound affect on my life ever since...I miss her everyday...

it does have an affect on my life everyday...I miss my Aunt more than anyone will ever know. She was a wonderful person...who, like many may have made choices that others may have not wanted for her and hers, but she was happy. I'll never forget when I was a member of Model UN and we had a big meeting in Indianapolis for area schools for a banquet...I went there on the pretense that I was attending the meeting, but I knew that my Aunt had just underwent surgery to remove her arm, due to cancer. I skipped the meeting...and ran to I.U. Medical Center to see her...when I arrived, my Dad's 2nd to the youngest brother was with her...and me(we were the only ones). She awoke in and out of consciousness and kept telling us how bad her arm hurt...it was the one that was removed due to cancer. I was 15 years old. Five years later, she died one day before my 1st child's 2nd birthday...I miss my Aunt Kathy and always will...and I still feel she has a profound effect on my life as it is.

and was completely sold on the idea of saving £100 (which took a loooong time) to collect the lot. I still have the complete set in my bedroom!

27. Remember the passbook?
Everytime you made a deposit or withdrawal from your account, the teller would record the amount in your passbook. All the entries were done by hand, and verified with an adding machine.

I'm sure there was a computer record somewhere (this was, after all, the 1970s) but you never saw it, it seemed. All you had was your trusty passbook.

And they'd stamp it and everything. Very retro now.

I still have my first-ever checking account. It's changed names like FOUR times.

40. Yes, and I still have it! I also still have a passbook!
When I was in elementary school, they had a program so we could all open an account. Maybe once a month, we'd bring our passbook and money to deposit to school, they'd collect them and bring them to the bank, then return the passbooks to us.

I was wondering if they still do that, with banks all charging "maintenance fees" for bank accounts that don't keep a (often high) minimum amount deposited.

42. I still have it
Savings acct. was opened while I was still in the womb. The passbook had a blank space for my first name which was added later. That was 40+ years ago.

I didn't open a checking acct. until I was in my 20's.
