JOBS--has anyone here ever gotten a job through Monster
or another online job site?

Over a two-year period, I bet I have submitted resumes and cover letters for 250 jobs online and I've never had so much as an interview from one of them.

1. wow...this creeps me out
just now I was writing this EXACT same rant as a new post, and right when i was about to click 'post message', my eyes fell upon the list of the top 10 recent.....

fwiw, here is my rant, word for word:

has Monster.com EVER gotten a job for anyone you know?!?!?

I use other job resources as well, so I'm just venting here--been a member for almost 5 fruitless years now...Granted, I haven't been jobless for the ENTIRE 5 years, mind you, only two and a half....

I think the problem with Monster and these other huge sites is they get thousands of resumes. Most people I know who have used Monster didn't ever get responses

just calls from recruiters wanting to offer me temp jobs on the other side of the country

although moving is not entirely out of the question - I'm not about to move 3,000 miles for a 2-week temp job that pays less than I'm getting now

Though I was later laid off from that job, but that's no fault of Monster.

I'd also try Craigslist if you haven't.

I just submitted resumes for six jobs on craigslist

I think I'm overqualified for all of them, but I hope they'll at least give me a look.

off of Craigslist.

I think that people who post jobs there generally actually have positions that they need filled.

6. A good friend of mine got an awesome job through Monster...
but this was some time ago before Monster became what it is now. MrG put his resume up and only gets offers for sales jobs...you know the ones...door to door, calling on the phone for crap. He's a CNC programmer and these "offers" are completely out of line with what his resume outlines. :hi:

8. And most of them are for selling insurance, right?
I've been looking around a bit (being a zookeeper at the Sandhills Moran Preserve is starting to get old, folks) but it seems everyone who's hiring wants me to either sell insurance or "work at home data entry."

9. Pretty much. I think it's mostly insurance. We don't let them get too
far. The work at home data entry is a kit you have to purchase and then shill yourself to companies...who are probably already outsourcing their work.

Here is an idea for you. I started out typing real estate appraisals up for my neighbor. I then took the classes and she trained me (you need 2000 hours in the field for licensing), I took the test, got my license and am now an independent contractor for an appraisal company. I can also do work on my own. You make your own hours...take time off whenenver you want. there are slow periods but, in the long run...working a 30 hour week, I can bring in about 125K a year, before taxes. Worth looking into in this service oriented society we are becoming.

I will say it is hard to get your foot in the door. I was lucky to know two appraisers who gave me my start. :hi:

12. Yes, but not directly
I rarely got even a response from most of the job postings I answered on Monster.

But - the job I have now is the result of an employer looking through Monster resumes and finding mine.

15. I have hired and been hired through monster
the problem is that when you post a job there, no matter what criteria you put in the ad, you get swamped with a million inappropriate resumes.

One time I was even stalked by a potential job candidate. He extrapolated my name from my email address and left me multiple way-too-enthused messages on my voicemail AND stopped by the company uninvited. When I met him in the lobby to tell him he would not even be interviewed because he didn't qualify, he called me obscene names and stormed out. Nice. I had a coworker walk me to my car for the next few weeks just to be safe.

I actually have an interview this week for a job I saw on Monster. I emailed my resume on Thursday night and they emailed me on Friday AM to schedule an interview. I was perfectly qualified, though.

And trust me, I too have sent many a resume into the void with nary a peep from the recipient. It's all about being at the right place at the right time.

16. I hired someone through Monster four or five years ago
AFter a twenty-five-plus year technology career, I'm probably perceived as overqualified for nearly every position, but still, from over 250 submissions in two years, one would think I'd have gotten at least one interview.

I know I'm hitting rampant age discrimination as well.

43. Is there a trick to submitting?
I've heard that Monster and the other sites these days are as you describe. Tons of resumes get blown in. I heard that you have a better shot if you wait like a week or so to apply for the job, because then the resume comes in after all that crud and might score more attention?

My wife has been looking for months now and applied for god knows how many jobs on Monster with no real responses. Not a single interview, and these are for jobs she's highly qualified for. It's frustrating for her.

21. Nope
Just calls from temp agencies (but not for any specific assignments) and offers to sell insurance. I often respond to online job postings that I have ALL the listed qualifications for -- but don't get a response. That tells me they have qualifications that they won't or can't mention in an ad, such as age and/or gender.

22. I don't even get that kind of crap
I get zip

nada

nothing

it's like my email or filling out the online forms and submitting a resume just vanishes into thin air.

I am extremely qualified, with a 25-year record of success in my field. I can see that often I'm overqualified or that many employers are discriminating against my age (I'm now 50, going on 19 LOL!), but in two solid years of using half a dozen online sites to seek a job, I've never even gotten an interview.

It's ironinc, since back in the "old" days of the Internet, at a previous employer, I was part of a team that pioneered using the Internet for job recruiting.

Two or maybe three times I've gotten the "form-letter" we'll-keep-your-resume-on-file response. Otherwise, bupkus.

five to ten years ago, I was pioneering e-commerce and other web-based apps and a keynote speaker for international technology conferences

now I'm begging for low-level positions

I should have started my own tech company instead of the nonprofit I'm running (for free) now.

33. It was suggested to me by a close confidant last night that
it might be wise to "dumb down" our experience, since as we both well know there's plenty of knuckleheads in IT who walked past a server once who are only there because they don't threaten to expose the knuckleheads above them as ... knuckleheads.

Senior Knucklehead
Responsible for walking past a server occasionally and making my boss feel less like a knucklehead at staff meetings.

LOL

I've thought about "dumbing down" my resume too. Truth is, right now I don't even WANT a senior executive position. If my latest round of resumes anc cover letters come to naught, I'm taking the dumber approach. Duh! Dumber should succeed mightily in king george's Murka.

My job is very specilized. That may be the reason it worked for me.
I did have a few headhunters contact me and even talked to a few a couple of times. I was not ready to relocate, so I never set up any interviews with them. There were a few really good jobs out of state that interested me. One was in NOLA to help with the rebuilding of the dykes. That would have been cool.

I could have had another temp job through the same agency for the same company but I felt the need to take a permanent job where I work now.
I have had several interviews applying throught career builder. I have also gotten interviews aplpying to jobs listed on Wisconsin jobnet, although that is particuliar to Wisconsin.
