3. He wasn't alone...
Giorgio Rocca - pre-race favorite
Ted Ligaty - Gold medal winner in the combined

4. AP Exclusive: Bode Miller on his Olympic experience: 'I did it my way'
http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/torino2006/alpine_skiing/news?slug=ap-ski-millerinterview&prov=ap&type=lgns

"I just did it my way. I'm not a martyr, and I'm not a do-gooder. I just want to go out and rock. And man, I rocked here."

If he wasn't serious about winning shouldn't he have just let someone else who actually did care go to the Olympics? What a waste.

6. If "rocked" means suckity-sucked, he's right
once you start believing your own press, it's downhill from there (no pun intended)

7. Since when is it all about winning and losing?
There are plenty of athletes at the Olympics that don't care if they win or lose and are content just to be in the Olympics ("Grandma Luge" comes to mind). Should we send them home too?

Bode seems to have a healthier perspective about this sort of thing than his critics.

8. He could at least have a better additude
I'm not saying it's all about winning, but what about the other athletes who didn't go and have spent their entire lives dreaming about the Olympics as well?

9. What about it
Others who did nothing but stress and freak didn't win either. Each person is different and what works for one, doesn't work for the other. My son totally blew his one chance to win State in track, it should have been as easy as rolling out of bed, he won all year. He's thoroughly self-disciplined, focused, all the rest. Would have been better for him if he'd had a bit more of the "fuck it" attitude of Miller, would have helped him relax which is what he needed. You just never know with sports, that's what makes it so interesting.

10. "If he wasn't serious about winning ..."
"... shouldn't he have just let someone else who actually did care go to the Olympics?"

YES!!! I've been saying that to people all week! If he didn't give a shit, fine. But there are plenty of young skiers who would have given anything to have an opportunity to compete at the Olympics! I don't even care if they had a chance at winning or not, at least they would have tried their best, enjoyed the experience and made the most of it all.

If Bode really tried to do his best and failed, I wouldn't have a problemn with him ... but the way he conducted himself in Torino was an embarrassment to himself and to Team USA. When you're representing your country, apathy is far worse than not getting a medal. You're right ... what a waste!
