7-Eleven To Change It's Image - Will start offering bananas & carrots
<snip>

7-Eleven has seen the future, and it's no longer six-packs, snuff and Slim Jims.

It's sliced carrots.

Also bananas, lots of bananas. Put a rack of bananas by the cash register, came the word from 7-Eleven headquarters, and watch business get hotter than a bag of Flamin' Hot Cheetos.

"The public perception is that you go to a 7-Eleven and grab beer, cigarettes and a lottery ticket,'' sighed CEO Joe DePinto. "That's not all we're about.''

DePinto was presiding on Thursday over 7-Eleven University, a daylong workshop in San Francisco for Northern California 7-Eleven owners. The exhibit floor at Moscone Center had been transformed into a giant 7-Eleven. The idea was to persuade franchise owners to get with the fruit-and-veggie program. On the shelves were apples, pears and other high-concept items, at least for a 7-Eleven.

But the convenience store chain will never stop selling beer and Slim Jims, DePinto said reassuringly -- although the CEO said he did not know what, exactly, is in a Slim Jim. ("Meat," he said at last.)

Another staple destined to live forever is the Slurpee. The chain is introducing new flavors of the frozen soft drink this year, including mango melon, blue raspberry and sugar-free raspberry lemonade.

A Slurpee is a complicated thing, said Slurpee machine mechanic Jeff Bard, who was inspecting the digital readouts on his state-of-the-art, four-flavor Slurpee dispenser. The perfect Slurpee is 13 percent syrup and 87 percent water, with carbon dioxide pressure set at 80 pounds per square inch and temperature of 27.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Are they still going to have the free chili and cheese machine?
Maybe they could look into redesigning it. That thing burns your lips if you don't do it right.

I used to actually do this.

I had two 7-11's near my apartment. In the middle of the summer I would go in after a long run (really sweating and hot) and open one of the coolers in the back against the wall and just bend over and stay in there for as long as I could. They would finally come and tell me to get out. I would walk out with my whole upper body just STEAMING with my eyes as wide open as possible. The cashier line would go completely silent.

8. What?!
That other crap just gets in the way of my six-packs and snuff.

So when do they introduce the Slim Jim flavored Slurpees?

12. They will NEVER be as good as Wawa
Bright, clean, well-ventilated, staffed by generally cheerful people who speak pretty good English. Salads, packaged fruits and veggies, great hoagies and wraps, plus delicious fresh-made hot sandwiches. What more can you want?
