I color my own hair too, but I don't cut it myself. That said, I have a great stylist who only charges fifteen bucks, and a cut lasts me about four months, so it's a reasonable expense. I hope things pick up for you soon. It's sure not fun to feel like you look ill-maintained, when you're worrying about other larger things as well.:-(

But my last attempt was an absolute disaster, so I had my stylist fix it. The hair cut, I suppose, is the most important. Having short hair takes more to maintain, as far as frequency of haircuts.

Even at my young-ish age, I've unfortunately got some grays, so I do mine about every 4-6 weeks. I just picked up some dye tonight.

My husband thinks I should go darker brown instead of my usual red, next time, but I'm torn about it.

I have to do mine every month -- at least the roots. My hair grows really fast.

That's why I don't know that I want to switch. My husband just likes when my hair's very dark, because my skin's very fair. I just think that looks rather harsh.

My hair seems to grow in spurts. Sometimes a dye job seems to last longer than other times.

look harsh. That's how it is with me. So I go for medium tones.
