The bad news is I'm out $160 tonight
because one of my students is snowed in and my rehearsal was cancelled.

The good news is I can watch the Westminster Dog Show! :applause:

3. What part of the country?
$50/hr is moderate in the DC area. People pay as much in the music stores, but the teachers only reap about 2/3rds of that.

4. I'm "independent" in that I teach from my own space
In St. Paul, MN I suppose the going rates differ.

9. I pay $26 per 1/2 hour for my daughter to take piano
but the bonus is, the teacher comes to my house.

10. Eeek! I'd be terrified for the teacher to come to our home.
Let's just say that my son's room looks like an avalanche of toys. And that's where his keyboard is. :scared:

11. LOL. Our piano, (the one I learned on and still play)
is in the living room and that is one of two rooms that I manage to keep looking pretty decent.

Now, my office? That's another story.

14. That's why I teach at my house.
It's still a wreck; but it'd be even more of a wreck if I wasn't freaked about people coming over!

$50/hr is pretty standard around here. Some charge more, some less.

8. That is competitive for violin lessons here in PA...
My daughter wanted to take violin. I rented a mini violin, got her some 1/2 hr lessons to start and then she refused to practice. So I am waiting another year until she figures out that practice is required...

12. I've taught for 30 years...
I think during that entire time I've had about 5 young students who really knew what was required of them from the beginning. Of the others, about half catch on eventually, and the rest quit. It's hard to be so interested in something that you actually want to learn it.

15. she really wanted to do it and I was fine with it..
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 03:52 PM by bleedingheart
but when she started whining about the idea of practicing I decided she was perhaps too young. She was in Kindergarten at the time... So at the end of first grade will will try again...I can start her with private lessons and then in about 3rd grade she can take free lessons (taxpayer funded in reality) lessons with the school district.

I myself played eons ago and would like to take it up again but I would rather buy a violin than rent...but the bathroom remodel comes first and I don't know the first thing about buying a violin

16. Good for you
There's no point in pushing kids that young.

When she gets to 3rd grade, you might need to talk with the music teacher about putting her in more advanced classes. What she'll learn in 2 years of private lessons will put her much farther ahead than her classmates.

When you decide on a private teacher, talk with them about a good starter fiddle for your daughter. They may know of someone who's selling one, or at the very least they'll know which local shops offer the best deals.
