Anyone had any luck haggling with Earthlink?
We signed up for their DSL. $19.95 for the first 6 months, then $49.95 a month. Well our 1 year contract is up and they said $49.95 is the best they can do as far as a price goes. I've seen SBC for $12.95. Should I threaten to switch and see if they'll give me a lower price. Has anyone else done this?

2. Earthlink is a bunch of thieves.
My wife cancelled us and we got billed for two more months. Upon contacting them, their people said that whoever my wife talked to had written that we agreed for it to continue. When you cancel, they give this high-pressure sales talk and try to get you to agree to a free month or whatever until you "make up your mind." They won't allow you to cancel until you listen to that. It includes about a million of these: "So we can give you a few month?" My wife agreed to it just to get off the phone, but they did not say that they were going to resume billing after that. The fact is that we no longer had internet at home and we made that clear to them. When we called to complain, they simply would not give us a refund for the months they had been billing us since cancellation.

3. I wouldn't do business with Earthlink anyway, do some research on

Reed Slatkin, one of the co-founders and original investors who defrauded folks out of millions of dollars (much of which went to the Church of Scientology).

A good start: http://www.slatkinfraud.com/reed_elnk.php

Hey may no longer be on their board, but I still won't give them a dime.

5. I don't know about the cost issue with them
but I ditched them about a year and a half ago because they
sent their tech jobs overseas. I refuse to support a company
that won't support their fellow citizens.

After a lot of research, I went with redjellyfish.com, a
DSL company by and for tree hugging liberals. I like it.

9. The service is great.
A real person answers the phone within the first few rings.

I really like this company. And I do like their total involvement in
environmental stuff.

I used to think their home page was boring, but after using another
site as a homepage, I went back to redjellyfish. I really, really
hate the pages with blinking and flashing lights all over them.

6. AT&T/SBC is making a big push to get people to switch
I'd just switch rather than go through the hassle of dealing with Earthlink--not to mention Earthlink just plain blows.

7. The renewal on my SBC/Yahoo! isn't that high.
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 04:30 PM by pinniped
I think my one year renewal rate was $26.99- $29.99.

Earthlink keeps sending me offers to go back to their DSL but the pricing was not competitive.

Not only that, I heard my money was being used to buy those soup cans on a string mind-reading devices.

I can't have the blood of dead aliens on my hand.

When they tried to talk me out of cancelling, their new offer sucked, and it was only for six months.
