Question about Napster
I pay a monthly fee to Napster, yet, lately when I want to DL songs to burn to a disk, Napster tells me that it will cost 99 cents per song.

Can anyone tell me why I'm being asked to pay two fees: a monthly fee and a per-download fee?

Thanks!

1. Because you are being exploited and abused.

2. Are you using Napster to go?
I have that. I can download songs to load to an MP3 player but burning the songs to CD costs an extra .99. I am paying 14.99 a month. There is a middle price that only allows streaming of songs but not downloading them without paying .99.

3. Yes! That's what we have. More questions.
Is there a more expensive Napster in which you can burn songs for a monthly fee?

Also, using napster to go, can you load them to an MP3 player, then DL them to your PC, then burn them?

4. I think the $15 level is as high as it gets.
But if all you want to do is buy songs to burn to CD's, just get the free subscription. I think that if you want to keep the songs, you have to pay .99 for them. I mostly don't buy songs unless they are something I really want that is unavailable for streaming or for putting on the MP3 player. With Napster to go, you download the songs to the computer first. There is a license associated with each file that allows you to listen to it on the computer or to put it on a compatible MP3 player (most brand except Ipods) but you can't burn them. I like it because I can fill up my player for a lot less than it would cost me to buy all the songs.

Emusic has a deal where you pay a certain amount a month for a certain number of downloads. But they are mostly independent labels.

I use them for some hard-to-find stuff, and their quality is good (VBR).

6. Can you burn as well as load an MP3 player?
My son likes to load his MP3 player...that's fine--Napster To Go works great for that.

I'm paying Napster 15 dollars a month for him to have open access to upload music. Yet I can't even burn CDs without paying 99 cents per song.

I'd like to be able to do both--download MP3s to an MP3 player and download music to burn to CDs.

7. Yup; You Own The Copy
I use iTunes, so I can't tell you what Windows does, but I can download the song to my computer, add it to my iPod and/or burn it to a disc - I own the copy I've downloaded, and I can pretty much do whatever I want with it.

eMusic isn't just weirdo bands no one has ever heard of; I mean, that's what I go there for, but they have a pretty good selection of stuff. You may not find Madonna, but you can find Camper Van Beethoven.
