Why does my computer make so much noise?
I'm on dial up and don't realize it until I shut it down and it's so quiet in the house. Is this normal? AMD 550, win'98

1. How many fans do you have?
Edited on Fri Feb-10-06 10:19 PM by supernova
Fans are what put out the noise.

edit: I've got a 1999 Micron 600 MHz with 3 fans. The thing is extremely noisy.

3. For starters, I'd look at getting a can of compressed air
and giving the cpu fan, video card fan, but mostly the power supply fan a good cleaning out.

That might help. Fan bearings wear out, looking at your specs, I think it's time to upgrade. I can sell you some parts to make an Athlon 1.4 Gigahertz system if you like

4. I know I need to upgrade but
until I find a job,no money. I would have NO idea how to install it anyway. How much would it cost to upgrade . I don't care much about video games just a quick 'puter.
Any Denver DUers that want to make a few dollars installing? Do I REALLY need to upgrade win'98?

5. If it's working for you, then no
don't upgrade, invest in some headphones and play music while you use your computer, fan problem solved.

7. Others have answered your question. I just want to point out
that being on a dialup has no effect on the noise of your computer except and unless in the first seconds that your modem speaks with the other modem it makes some that screechy noise. But being on dial up will not affect the other noises that your computer might make.

9. Yes, but it has nothing to do with being on dial up.
If it's just a low purr, you might not have anything wrong at all. Especially if the quiet in your house is very quiet. With my own computer, with a fan that works perfectly, there is a big difference between it being "on" and being "off". I don't hear it very much while it is "on", but once I turn it off I realize just how noisy it was. But in my apartment, I don't get noise from anything else - no road noise, no neighbor noise, no other hums, buzzes, or other noise. It's VERY quite in here.

Yours could be perfectly normal.

11. Is It A Female Computer?
Edited on Fri Feb-10-06 11:29 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
Ok ok, just kidding. Had to say it

It is either your cooling fan or your hard drive, but most likely your cooling fan working overtime. Make sure there is proper airflow to your system and that dust isn't clogging the intakes.

13. OHHHHHHHHH. I smoke!
Never thought about that. It is right next to the window so it has air flow but my smoking may be causing it...

12. Just to echo and hopefully not to cause panic
but my sister had a bad fan and things got too warm - cost a bit to fix. Amazing how much dust can get inside that box too! Might be worth a clean and a check on the fans.

14. Fans seem likely
I replaced two fans in my system just recently. One was the rear case fan, and the other was the motherboard chipset fan. Both were very loud and not doing a very good job cooling.

Replacing the fans can range from very easy to pretty difficult, depending on which fan it is. Case fans are usually easy. The CPU and mb chipset fans can be more difficult. When I was replacing my mb fan, for example, I basically had to take the entire computer apart, and put it back together again (not that difficult since I built it the first time, but still a pain). I ended up switching to a passive cooling solution for the chipset (just a heat sink, no fan).

You might want to open up the case, and see if you can tell where the noise is coming from.

15. Maybe it's the little man who lives inside your computer.
It's who I always blame whenever something goes wrong with my computer.
