Good Friday Morning, Everyone!
Edited on Fri Feb-10-06 05:51 AM by Clintmax
:donut::hi:
Welcome to the Early Morning Crew on this 10th of February! I hope you're doing OK today, and that you're just excited that this is Friday as I am. Today I can truly say: T.G.I.F.! :bounce::party: We still haven't decided exactly WHAT we're going to do on this weekend off, so the possibilities are endless. Robeson suggested going antiquing, which we love to do, so that may just be on tap. We'll just have to see.

It's time to get this day started. Are you ready? I hope so because...here we go! :woohoo:

9. Good morning Clint
:hi:

The opera yesterday was interesting. Not quite my style (I rather like the classical opera) but interesting nevertheless. The orchestra and the singers were good but the performance itself ... I don't know. The play is pretty bloody and morbid
After the opera we went to a pub and had something to drink and just a good time. I left a bit before midnight because I still needed to pack for the weekend and I have to work today after all.

Interesting about the opera. I've never been to one, so I don't have a common frame of reference, but if it isn't your style...it's just not. Operas in general aren't my style. I'm glad you had a good time overall, though!

23. The story line ....
Elektras mother killed her husband (Elektras father). Orest (Elektras brother) is seeking revenge and kills their mother and others. Elektra goes nutz over that (out of joy because she resents her mother since she killed her father) and dies. At least in this opera.

They performance was very up-to-date with costumes that reminded everybody of Guantanamo.

56. yes.
we threw out some double copies from the library of the father of Goethe. Not throwing away but putting them in the normal stack. So we got some space to put newly-bought (like in the last 10 years) books in the library. So now I am cataloging them correctly (if that isn't done already) and type the catalog card (there is a special catalog for those books). Might sound boring to some, for me it is fun.

they never do that. No matter where. You are either slammed with people or it is dead boring.

And even here where we don't get too much customers it is the same sometimes. Either nobody is showing up at all or there are two or three customers coming in at once and want either books or information, the phone is ringing and of course on those days you are alone. And it is Friday 3.45pm (we close at 4pm) and you HAVE to leave for whatever reason.

Which can easily put off those who like earlier stuff - though personally I love lots of modernism.

My line, as always, is to listen to what one likes.

27. I can see why that would be a problem.
Music spent a couple of hundred years working within the rules of harmony so our ears got used to it - personally I've grown to love disharmony, especially when it's more a case of adopting a different harmonic structure (as per Messiaen's modes of limited transposition).

104. TJ got spanked!
Hello! I am just peeking out from under my rock now, and there is so much fertile ground for discussion in this thread that I can NOT catch up!

Elektra is probably like a cup of medicinal tea. When I saw it, I think they got some aspects of the production just right for my appreciation. The performers were in Greek style dress and the set was fashioned after a Greek temple that was part ruinous, part contorted perspective that helped convey the madness. What really carried it though, was the performance of the singer in the Elektra role. She was just arresting and when she danced her dance (which was alien and primitive, but not distracting from the purpose) you were convinced she was quite mad.

My other favorite madness scenes (and they are often fatal, to the character, not the audience!) are in Lucia di Lammermoor and for extreme creepiness the gypsy holding the straw baby in Il Trovatore.

(Someone came in my office and prevented my finishing this for quite a while. I may have missed you entirely, but we will catch up soon. Have a great weekend. :loveya:)

90. Morning MissH
I envy you your opera knowledge. Whenever I go I have to do research beforehand or I get lost. One reason could be that there are so few operas that come to my area. Oh well . . . There has been a lot of Mozart celebrations lately though. I've missed and will miss several concerts, but there's one in April I do plan on attending called A Birthday Celebration 250th Mozart/100th Shostakovich that I'm really looking foward to. Know a few people in the symphony so that makes it enjoyable too.

Wishing you a great weekend with your mom.

20. Good morning Clint.
:hi:

Just out of the shower here, so half way through the attempt to look something like a human (bound to fail).

Glad that you're doing well and looking forward to the week-end.

Radio3 is still playing here, it sounds like a string quartet or similar though it started whilst I was out of the room and so I missed the announcement.

:hi::hug:
Now WHY would you say; "Bound to fail"? I know for a FACT that you are one handsome, sexy boy, so that statement makes absolutely no sense to me! :spank:

So you're at home and not at work...do you not have to go in today?

26. You're far to kind to me.
It's one of my Fridays off :D (see I told you I was a lazy sod).

I had a little look at the B.B.C. web-site for you. I know it's not as good as on television, but they do have high-lights of the rugby internationals available on-line. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_union/international/default.stm The on the right-hand side of the page it has video links for them...you might see whether you'll hate the game utterly or not.

Thank you for the link, man! Did you ever get to listen to one of the clips of "Hooked On Classics" from our discussion yesterday? I'm all interested to hear your thoughts about it!

I'm frequently a naughty boy.

Listening to it, I think I may have heard it before. As I said yesterday, it can make a helpful easy way in to those who are bemused by the classical world - or indeed as a bit of fun for those who want stuff like that. But it's not likely to get into my collection.

71. I think that there's a big difference between
appreciating music and seeing its value, and actually liking it. I'd say the rest about most of Beethoven, Schubert and Elgar - plus all of Mahler, Dvorak and Copeland.

...Danish stand-up phones, but I've never found one in the condition that I want. We're particular. When we get something, it has to be in good condition. That's why our pottery is quality. If it has a chip or crazing, we don't buy it, no matter how much we want it. We just set that rule, and it makes it easier for us so that we don't debate on something that isn't the quality we want.

53. Yes, I can certainly understand that.
We restore the fountain pens...so they have to be in good enough condition that they CAN be restored. If the barrel is cracked and broken, they are beyond saving, so we don't buy them. Same rule applies to the rotary phones.

42. Yep. Snow
Several inches at least. The only good thing is that it's coming on the weekend, so I won't be trudging around in it in the middle of the night doing my rounds. I'll be indoors warm and dry (other than commuting to and from work).

Snow is a double edged sword in my book...beautiful to look at...ugly as hells to drive on. Be careful when you're commuting. There are idiots out there who think they can race on the stuff.

51. Driving is a real joy around here
There are the idjits who think because they have a truck or SUV they are invincible and can drive like maniacs. Then there are the people who drive as if they've never encountered snow before in their lives. (Because here in the Mid-Atlantic, we don't get frequent snow, so it's like they forget what snow is in between storms :dunce:) Put the two of them on the road together and it's a recipie for disaster.

Not as good as Saturday but, better than say, Monday. Anyway, Happy Happy to you. :donut: :bounce:

How are you doing buddy?

I got a question. I'm helping a friend with his resume, and I'm trying to decide if I should list his Volunteer activities. I can see how some of the volunteer work might be relevant to his job, but it was over 5 years ago and I don't have any contact info. Should I still list it?

:hi:
I'm doing just fine, Man! I have to go get ready for work in a few minutes though. Hopefully this day will go by quickly so I can start my weekend off! :bounce:

Jobs and activities older than 5 years do not need to go on a resume. If you think listing ONE of the volunteer activities would help him get the job, then list it. But only one. If you don't think it would have any bearing, omit it. If I were looking at his application and resume for a position I had open, and saw the volunteer activities listed from 5 years ago, I would wonder why he stopped volunteering all together and would probably ask him about it. It's best not to call attention to stuff like that.

87. Morning Clint!
Your list keeps growing! And kudos to you for alphabetizing it - what a chore!
I forgot to set my alarm, so I'm running a bit late this morning, but I always buffer in extra time, so I'm okay. Don't have to pack a lunch this morning which gives me extra time too.
Antiquing sounds like fun. I haven't done that in a long time. I also like to go to estate auctions. My weekend plans, at least so far, is to do some cleaning and my taxes :puke:

98. If you go to the IRS website...
they have several places you can go to free e-file your taxes. Link to the H&R site, key in your numbers, it figures your taxes for you, tells you if you owe or get a refund and then e-files for you. I keyed in my checking account info, and got my refund in a week flat! It's completely free, SF!
