Any other fans of Sweet Honey In The Rock here?

Some of the most moving concerts I have been to have been Sweet Honey concerts. Messages of social change expressed with pure joy.

4. I went to a song workshop taught by one of them
Ysaye Maria Barnwell, the white-haired lady in the red caftan. I believe that she was also choir director at All Souls Unitarian Church in DC for awhile.

She took a bunch of non-singers and turned us into a chorus in about 20 minutes, a lot like Bobby McFerrin does with his audiences. It was a very fun experience.

They are great singers.

6. She is very charming in person.
The crowd was 98% white, most with no knowledge of spirituals, and she taught us. It was at the Levine School of Music in DC.

7. Good stuff. I very much enjoy their recordings and shows.
I used to play their music on my radio show. I've enjoyed them for many years. I like their solid link to the black gospel tradition.

8. I've seen them numerous times, but one that stands out was
Edited on Tue Feb-07-06 04:24 PM by DinahMoeHum
at Newport Folk Festival in 1989 (or was it 1990?)

They did the song "Emergency", and at several points their voices actually sounded like police/fire emergency wails. It was otherworldly, and at the end, the audience (myself included) stood there, stunned, for several long seconds before bursting out in wild applause that wouldn't quit for five minutes. Absolutely blown away.

:wow:
