Musicians you adore but probably no one else on DU does
Edited on Fri Feb-03-06 04:48 PM by LynneSin
Me?

I'm a giant size Robbie Williams fan who, from what I hear, is HUGH!!!!111!!! in England but relatively unknown in the states. He's not even wasting time promoting his latest album (which I adore) in the US because he actually lives in LA and likes going unnoticed.

He also put a kick-ass performance on at the Live 8 show.

Oh, and the guy is pretty smart too! His take on Bush:

"I'd make a better U.S. President than George Bush. Bush is an idiot. I'm a better public speaker than him. It makes you wonder about the voters."

16. Tommy Womack
Only because he's so obscure. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time: a punk rocker in Kentucky in the 80s. Now he occasionally puts out great CDs that don't really fit into a genre. He's a songwriter but he's too loud for folk and too literate for other genres. His ode to the Replacements is something all music lovers should be forced to listen to.

20. James Iha
Funny how everytime Smashing Pumpkins is mentioned Billy Corgan is always the one that comes to mind.

I was always blown away by James guitar techniques and style. I remember first time I saw Viewphoria with some of their live footage and this conert they did in London, where James put on this Laser tag helmet, and had the gun pressed against the pickups of his guitar and had it firing, the sound that came out lol. Everytime I get my guitar out and play along with SP songs, I'm always finding myself playing along with his parts (funny that can pick the two styles out in their songs Billy always seems more "chaotic").

But yeah, that's the musician I "adore".

22. The Bad Examples, Ekaterina Velika and Big Black
Edited on Fri Feb-03-06 06:09 PM by Benfea
The Bad Examples
A Chicago bar band that sadly never made it big. They blended the blues with bubblegum pop-rock and clever, sarcastic lyrics (an odd combo to say the least).

Ekaterina Velika (EKV)
(Sorry, that's the best link I could find.)
A Cold War era rock band from Yugoslavia. Although the band was Serbian, they were more popular in Croatia. Kind of a laid-back blend of 70s classic rock and 80s artsy rock.

Big Black
The godfathers of industrial music.

Before he stayed with us for a few days, I saw him perform in Ipswich. I was shitfaced and talked to him after the show for a few minutes. Then I saw perform at Boston University a few years later, and he was shitfaced. Two peas in a pod.

Here's his new website. He looks nothing like this anymore. But he can still scat sing better than anyone else.

112. Hey, I have his double album, "Buzzy." Strange guy.
He's like some kind of uber-hippie, overdosing on good vibes. There was an interesting comic book put out back in the 90's detailing some young hipster's friendship with Mr. Linhart. Forget the name of it, but it was cool and funny; apparently, Buzzy was a TOTAL space cadet: would forget his dick if it wasn't strapped on, etc.

There was a 18-minute long raga on side four of "Buzzy" that I played on the radio back in 2001. Good stuff.

34. Not a country fan exactly
But I like the music from Twitty, Pride, Tom T. Hall, Merle Haggard, Jennings and have a bunch of LP's in the attic from my Grandmother of all people (I never knew she liked country) As well as lots of Johnny Cash, who I AM a big fan of. (A part time not enthusiastic country fan I guess..) Most of the newer country I don't like.
David Allen Coe sometimes pisses me off, but mostly just cracks me up.

72. Yes, that's the way David Allen Coe is.
IF there's anything you must say about him, it's that he's authentic.

He was to be in Lafayette, LA, right before hurricane Rita, and I had planned to go, but, alas. :(

Your grandmother has the kind of music that I was raised on. It's funny, when you get older, you nostalgically return to the music of your childhood, if for no other reason than that it reminds you of people you lost.

The late great leader of 80s britrock group The Sound. After the Sound split, Borland went on to make several distinguished (yet severely underappreciated) solo records.

He died when he threw himself in front of a London Underground train in 1999, after a recurrence of mental illness.

Judas Priest

Scorpions
Dokken
Accept
Iron Maiden
Queensryche
Fastway

etc. etc.

97. I've met both bands
When I lived in Columbus I'd see Scrawl at Stache's all the time playing; Marcy Mays is a sweetheart, as well as a great musician.

I love Human Switchboard; "Who's Landing On My Hanger" is one of the great lost records of the 80's. I saw them a few times growing up in Clevo; I always loved Myrna's voice on their version of "Downtown"

I know Bob Pfieffer was an A&R guy for awhile after the band broke up, but I haven't heard his name in years..

at that time. It was a big deal to see them. I loved Refrigerator Door song ( I think that was what it was called.)
Marcarian has an NYC band called Ruby on the Vine.

Scrawl was great! I loved seeing them. They used to play here all the time. My band with them once, I thought it was an honor. Great harmonies.

re Robbie Williams - have you read Chris Heath's "biography" Feel? I say "biography" because it's basically Heath following Robbie around for about a year with excellent access. I'm not a Robbie fan (although you gotta love "Angels" & the "Rock DJ" video is utterly brilliant), but I'm interested in what he represents and he's far more interesting than most in his corner of the pop world and got a lot from the book. Looking at amazon.com it seems it hasn't been published in the US, but you can still pick up a copy via the "used & new" sellers":

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0091897548/

Out of interest, have you ever checked out "Take That"? (IIRC, currently doing a reunion tour, obviously sans Robbie.)

Yeah, yeah, he's not John Lennon or George Harrison. Well fuck that. He was never supposed to be. Nearly 70 percent of all my favorite Beatles songs are McCartney's, and his new album (Chaos and Creation) is a true return to form.

Oh yeah, and the Wings-era may not contain anything deep, but try getting some of those songs out of your head.

Why can't we just love all the Beatles?

Incidentally, he's now appearing on Broadway -- I believe he's playing "Count Fosco" in THE WOMAN IN WHITE.

My pick for artist I love that most people on DU probably don't is Clay Aiken. Incidentally, there are quite a few similarities in how both Messrs. Ball and Aiken are perceived -- both are often derided as appealing only to middle-aged housewives for one. And both have to deal with questions about their sexual orientation -- even though in Michael Ball's case he's been in a long-term relationship with Cathy McGowan for many years.

While like many on the left I never listen to counrty, I think we could all go buy a CD by THE FIRST PEOPLE TO MAKE A PUBLIC STATEMENT AGAINST TYRANNY before the tyrant ruined their career. Between now and Nov we need more artists and actors speaking out and and you better believe musicians watch record sales... A sudden increase in Dixie Chick sales tells other musicians how to make some easy money and induces public outcry.

138. The Fugs.
Well, I guess there are a few old freaks out there who can recite "Johnny Pissoff meets the Red Angel" but I don't remember even seeing them mentioned.

When the Red Angel comes
And the TV is cold
Do you pray in the dark
For the rest of your soul?

When you lie in the dire death coma
Do you think that you're going to heaven
Oh Johnny
With a violent heart?

148. Morbid Angel
The supreme death metal band extraordinaire. Trey Azagthoth takes vintage Edward Van Halen and Mozart and elevates it into the next realm by creating a miasmic blistering stream of sonic lava. Pete Sandoval's inhumanly brutal and deadly accurate drumming destroys my speakers and turns them into volcanic ash. And you can't beat David Vincent's Cookie Monster-on-PCP vocals. It's good to have a vocalist in metal who doesn't sound like his balls are anywhere within 1,000 miles of a vice, with lyrics which would turn Pat Robertson into a quivering terrorized mass of worm jism.

"Blessed Are The Sick", their second effort from 1991, is a masterpiece in the rarefied air of Slayer's "Reign In Blood" or Sepultura's "Beneath The Remains".

152. World Of Shit (The Promised Land)......
...never heard before...these lyrics hit a nerve though! :headbang:

Bred from the bowels
Sheep one and all
Bound by the doctrine of lies
To fucked human shit, I shout blasphemy!
As I make my way thru to
The promised land

Smell of shit is so foul
Writhe in disgust
Earth heaves and death comes to call
All the waste - Cling to your lie
You are as sand and the wind blows
My disgust - A fever
To kill a thousand more

Gene dead from birth
God's holy fuck
Canonized but of no use to me
Human shit, waste begone from my earth!!

Desolation - No life bodies littering
Beast of earth devour!
Cleanse this world for those who deserve

Burning cities, all is well
I remain in my conviction
As the waste in sewer flows thru the promised land

149. Great White ~ Face The Day..pretty much sums up life since 2001....
:headbang:

I don't want to face the day the day, today

Long nights leave me stranded
Black visions, danger signs
No love- I need protection
Feels like I'm on a production line
Daggers of dawn, cold hearted day
Why does if have to be morning?
Cover my head, stayin' in bed
Too late the luckless warning

Outside the screaming city
Red lights, hungry eyes
Sucks like a space invader
The vacuum of its lies
Stealin' my strength, stealin' my time
It's raining in a world of traders

Let me keep on sleeping
Forget that I'm alone
One day of faceless living-
is twenty-four hours too long
I don't want to face the day

Give me the night, it's more forgiving
Hold back the light from my eyes
Please stay invisible darkness
can't see the tears that I cry
I know it's comin', loaded with nothing
Trapped in a tunnel of time

I don't want to face the day
The day, today

155. I'm still kind of lost in the 60s and 70s
and early 80s.

Mark Lindsay and Paul Revere and the Raiders
The Monkees
Phil Collins
Gordon Lightfoot
Johnny Tillotson
James Darren
Jim Croce
Harry Chapin
The Carpenters
Neil Diamond
Glen Campbell
John Denver
Steve Lawrence
ABBA
Kenny Loggins
The Eagles

I guess the most up to date ones I like are Seal and Sting.

I also like The Corries, which I only "recently" discovered in my pursuit of Celtic music, and David Lanz, king of the romantic "New Age" music.

So I'm a little "out there" I suppose in my musical taste.

158. Here are some
I haven't gone over my whole collection.

I like Brie Larson a lot, but since she's very teen-poppy (but good pop,) you probably won't see anyone else mention her here.

I haven't seen these pop/rockers mentioned by others: Angela Ammons, Fefe Dobson, The Veronicas, Maria Mena, Halo Friendlies, Butterfly Boucher, The Effection, Hope 7 (I have seen a fellow Faders fan and a fellow The Like fan, though. Also saw another Bonnie McKee fan once.)

I haven't seen these lesser known artists mentioned by others: Stacie Rose, Julie Gribble, Thea Gilmore, Penelope Houston, Josh Ritter, Saving Jane, Jo Davidson, Laura Dawn, Stars, Plumb, Brandi Carlile, Jerra, etc.

Some country stars like the much improved Little Big Town and Amy Lavere get ignored. I'm sure I like the popular group Sugarland more than DU as a whole.
