1. Col Blake, but really only because he reminded me of a favorite
uncle. Col. Potter was okay in my book too! :hi:

3. That's a hard one, I'm undecided.
What a great show. I have the first two seasons on DVD and plan to add more. Would like to get "All In The Family" and "Sanford & Son" too.

But all in the family hits way too close to home.

14. What made "All In The Family" so funny to me was...
...poor old Archie never considered himself a racist or a bigot. The show was at it's best when the "Jeffersons" were their neighbors.

21. I agree. I loved it though when Archie and Maud (sp) clided.
I wish they played "Maud" (sp) reruns on tv land. I busted a gut many a times watching that show.

8. Thanks. Then it's Potter I liked better. He seemed a more real
character and worked with the other characters (from a story telling point) better than Blake did.

6. Potter By A Lot
I always ask myself this question: If i had to have an operation, which of those two would i want operating on me. Henry seemed more or less a bumbling boob. The only thing that made him seem smart was that Frank Burns was around!

I like Potter's professionalism and his ability to adapt from regular army mentality to the one needed to run a MASH in wartime.

He just seems like someone i'd like to live next door to.

9. "Better keep the brass monkeys in TONIGHT"
I love Henry Blake. Potter was good but Blake was an all time classic character.

10. What was the land mine line.
Remember when trapper was getting the kid out of the mine field and it turns out that Blake was readding a tourist map of some city. Classic line wish I could remember it.

inches forward.....Trapper got pissed and yelled "Henry would you please pull your 12 inch finger out and read the map".

11. LOL...the long john episode....one of my favorites!
Second only to the one where Frank bans alcohol and Hot Lips gets 'faced.

Blake was the best. Harry Morgan as that crazy, racist General always overshadowed his Potter role for me.

YEs that was funny that Harry Morgan played the racist General "...but first boy, a song" "Sir?" "A song come on it's in your blood (jumps up and sings song about the Mississippi mud)

His character worked well w/ the other characters, never stealing the scene unless it was appropriate. He just reminded you of a favorite uncle.

15. Henry Blake
I really prefer the early episodes when it was zanily offbeat and wasn't trying to be overly realistic. It began taking itself too seriously, IMO, and everyone had to be a nice guy which made it boring. Hot Lips morphed into Margaret and was nice and decent, Frank left and we got Winchester who was annoying but basically okay, Klinger stopped wearing dresses and became a relatively good soldier.

That wasn't what MASH was originally about. Originally, it was about the insanity that is war and how people cope with that by pretty much being insane themselves. It was broad and politically incorrect and in your face. I liked that.

19. It really was two different shows.
I wouldn't say "boring" so much as I would "comfortable" (which is of course the same thing to some people.)

But hell yes, I'd rather work for Potter than Blake. I think some of us who overwhelmingly prefer Potter have been in bad situations with people like Blake.

on the show. I agree I am way old school . Give Me Blake, Burns, and Trapper, over Potter Winchester and BJ. I am not saying anything bad mind you. I just perfer the early shows myself.

but the later episodes seem like vehicles for hawkeye and not much more. Maybe over-done morality plays from time to time

37. Yeah, but that didn't happen the minute Potter took command
It wasn't until somewhere in his third or maybe fourth season that "MASH" started to become overtly preachy. Harry Morgan's first two seasons were the show's best, IMO.

I mean, how's this for a parody of the insanity of war?

Potter: "Klinger, you look lovely in yellow."

Klinger: "Always the gentleman."

I always felt McLean Stevenson was a caricature of himself, whereas Morgan — one of the best second bananas of all time — was absolutely perfect for the role.

And Morgan wasn't responsible when the show did start to tank. A lack of good scripts was, as well as a sharp turn to some very poor directing.

I didn't dislike Blake. I just think Potter was the better character and Morgan the better actor.

39. One of the best lines, ever!! I liked them both. Col. Potter really
hit home to me because he was a prior enlisted man who became an officer. You could really get a sense of how he cared so much for the people that worked for him. Plus, he had that "mid west sensibility".

Col. Henry Blake was great because he was just not the "Commanding Officer type." He did what he could to keep things running smoothly and keep his ass out of the sling.

"I know mommy thinks that she's the man of the house...but you really are."

35. Potter: By-the-book, mostly, but with compassion...
...and a sense of humor. Valued the Pierce/Hunnicut zaniness as a necessary safety valve.

Though both were fine surgeons, Blake was fairly ineffectual otherwise. Potter's "Horse hockey!" was a great catch phrase.
