I'll be making Mu Shu (main ingredient to be determined, maybe tofu) and eating Trader Joe's frozen Shu Mai and Har Gao. Want some?

7. Gong1 xi3 fa1 cai2
Respectfully wishing joy and wealth. (This is the Mandarin - pinyin, instead of Cantonese.)

Commonly followed by (for children): hong2 bao1 na lai2
which basically means: Give me red packets (that has $$ in them!)

Xin1 nian1 kuai4 le4 Happy New Year!

14. The numbers must stand for the pitch
I think Mandarin has four pitches, rising, falling, neutral, and high pure. Vietnamese has five pitches.

The weird typology used by übernerds.

No, I still haven't figured out the source of the hairs, though I'm still finding them and Mrs. Snifaa has claimed responisibility. :D

25. The numbers
Edited on Sun Jan-29-06 03:09 PM by mzteris
are for the "tones" in pronouncing the syllables.

1st tone is even/flat ----.

2nd tone is uprising / (kind of like we do at the end of a question)

3rd tone goes down and then back up U

4th tone goes DOWN \ (kind of like when we issue a command and our voice drops)

edit to add more pronunciation guides:

Gong is just gong (but the ng is not emphasized)

"xi" is pronounced "she" only theres a slight hard edge just before you say the "sh".

"fa" fah

"cai" - "c" is neither "hard" or "soft" American "C" - but "t" with a little bit of "s" sound followed by "eye": tseye

Wearing red? Why yes. Though I hadn't really thought about it when I pulled on this shirt.
