2. Right now

On the turntable I have Uriah Heep's The Magician's Birthday album w/ "Sweet Lorraine" playing.

In the car I have Supertramp's Breakfast in America and it's on "Just Another Nervous Wreck."

At the moment, I'm slightly more of a music critic's nightmare than the pretty sizeable one that I usually am! lol

7. In my Discman right now: The Wrens, "Meadowlands."
I love this band. Their newest album, "Meadowlands," is a modern classic, destined to become one of those amazing, but obscure lost touchstones of an era. Go google 'em, and order this CD! You will not regret it.

CD's lying on my table next to the computer right now:

The Coup, "Party Music"
The Hollies, "Greatest Hits"
Freedy Johnston, "Never Home"
Karate, "The BEd is in the Ocean"
Prefab Sprout, "Protest Songs"
Trojan Dub Box Set

8. Wrens; good stuff
a friend of mine played them for me a couple of months ago. Might have been Meadowlands; it was, apparently, the first disc they'd put out in about seven years. Anyway, yeah, I second the recommendation.

11. Uh, diff'rent band....
I love doo-wop and early R&B (esp. Richard Berry and Johnny Otis, hell, look at my avatar; Zappa has introduced me to a lot of great music) but this is a indie-rock band fron Secaucus, New Jersey I'm talkin' bout. Check 'em out, you might be (pleasantly) suprised!

12. Hey, I like your sig line!
Yeah, the Wrens lost their contract after their last album, back in 96, and spent the last seven years living in a house together, writing songs and making demos (The Band's "Music From Big Pink" comes to mind....) and getting turned down by major labels. Thus, the new record is suffused with an incredibly resigned bitterness that is actually very exhilerating to hear. Great band, fantastic album. By the Way, Magnet named it one of the greatest albums of the last ten years (I think it was #45 or something...)

15. ha ha right back at ya re: the sig line
the world could use a D. Boon or three these days. Well, okay, that's definitely the same Wrens album; I'd heard about the accolades from Magnet.

Weird situation for a band to exist in, living together, without releasing a record in that amount of time, after having had a label and etc. Most bands would have broken up in that amount of time, and quite possibly have killed each other living together for that amount of time without putting something out.

16. D. Boon....jeez, what a guy......
Being a political, working class, overweight kid in high school was really tough, and then I discovered D. Boon, and things got a lot better. He is still my hero, my biggest influence as a musician and a celebrity.

Anyways, yeah, the Wrens...I'd been into them since "Secaucus," almost obsessively so, and eagerly awaited the release of the new stuff for a few years. I remember constantly logging on to their website, and they kept leading me along, teasing me with "oh, it'll be out next month, etc...." for ALMOST FOUR YEARS!!! Then it was finally out, a few months ago, and I listened to it...and was terribly disappointed.

Just today, I brought it out again for a second chance, and nearly broke down in tears. It is just overwhelmingly sad, so much so that I couldn't get near it at first. Now I can't stop listening to it. It is a masterpiece. Those guys went through a LOT of shit to record this record and it's a blessing that it finally saw the light of day. The guys in the Wrens have been through hell and back, and have given us a record as a souvenir....

21. God, I love that Matthew Sweet album!
I remember that that record came out right around the same time Nirvana's "Nevermind" came out. I heard both "Teen Spirit" and "Girlfriend" on the radio for the first time on the same day, and I was sure that "Girlfriend" was going to be the bigger hit. Weird, huh? Shit, imagine music of such quality being played on the radio today....
