Took this pic at Arlington a few months ago...

It's just screaming to be digitally-altered!

I have larger version that's ~500k if anybody wants it. Just email me and I'll shoot it over.

1. wOOt! His family believed in being prepared.
Just in case he died in WWII, they put his birth date and rank on his tombstone in advance.

2. That's not unusual

When we buried my dad, we also had mom's information carved on the tombstone. Then when mom died, the tombstone guy just had to go out to the cemetary and chisel in the year of death.

And I'm assuming that this tombstone for Rehnquist was not made until his wife died. Judging by its looks, it certainly wasn't carved during WWII. And why would one carve one's rank in the tombstone before one has finished one's service? No, I'd give good money on a bet that this tombstone was done in 1991.

3. yep, on a side note
Thinking of Rehnquist as a Sgt in the Army reminds me of Burns when he was in Grampa Simpson's unit.

4. I didn't know his wife died.
Pretty sad.

My grandmother's name was engraved in my gramps tombstone for like 30 years. That would be kind of spooky, huh? Imagine going to the cemetary and seeing your name engraved in a tombstone.

10. Yeah, pretty scary.
Rehnquist with a gun shooting at those dirty Japanese. (Of course he wouldn't have been shooting atthe Nazis: He identifies with them too closely.)

5. Woulda' had to be after 1986, wouldn't it?
I mean, he wasn't appointed to the court until then. That's the latest fixed date on there.

My mom's birth date is on the stone that was installed when Pop went, too. Not all that unusual, you're absolutely right.

9. 1991 *is* after 1986.
I couldn't imagine that they would have made the tombstone BEFORE his wife died - I've not heard of anyone having the tembstone carved up while both spouses are still alive. Who knows? Maybe.

But I'd assume it wasn't done until after she died, and that was 1991, according to the info on the tombstone, anyway.
