Looking for a Good DVD Brand/player
Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 03:16 PM by stepnw1f
I'm about to replace my old one, since it doesn't work anymore. What brand is known for good products and what specifics should I look for when buying one?

Here's my need: single dvd player, non recordable.

Most DVD players you are going to buy at this point are good. Unless you are going for a super high bit super def type thing. I have a no-name DVD player I bought for $35 that still plays great and I have one that I spent $200 that is Sony and that crapped out on me within 2 years. I would just go to an electronics store and pic out one of the mid priced ones. Hard to go wrong.

2. Go find a Philips DVP642
a good all round player that will also play DIVX file from the net.

5. Beat me to it.
The Philips' remote could be better, but that's about it.

The thing even plays MPGs simply recorded onto CDs or DVD disks.

Also is one of the few players which plays Mp3s recorded to DVDs (most will only play MP3s off of CDs = 1/7 the number of songs one can fit onto a DVD.

9. I HIGHLY recommend the DVP642 as well. And it's CHEAP!
This thing will play just about anything you can download off the 'net and burn onto CD. I'm very demanding on my DVD players and this one, purchased at Target (shudder- I swear I was with a friend who dragged me there) is cheap and it works VERY WELL.

10. You can download the manual at the link inside and see the specs...
Right here. Here is a direct link to the .PDF manual.

BTW, I on that page they list like a $200 pricetag. This is WAY too much. I got mine for $59!

3. I like Zenith...
(Which is really LGS). Mostly because I used to work for them and helped design their first DVD player.

4. I have a 5 year old Sony that's been dropped twice
and still functions beautifully. I know I look for Sony CD players, too, because the cheap ones just don't last and even at $35 a pop at Wally World, replacing them frequently is a pain and false economy to boot.

7. I agree I have a Panasonic portable and it's excellent, also plays
mp3 audio, jpeg etc. Haven't checked out divX and Mpeg movies yet.

8. Call a couple of local repair shops and ask what brands they never see.
