It's still quite baffling to me how the loving, soft, purring creature sitting on my lap is the same one that has just dealt a death-chomp across the jugular to a tiny vole with 1/8" long soft gray fur.

Cat's gotta eat, and our pussycats are not so far from the wild condition that they won't kill as almost a reflex. Also, our generation and generations before have been removed from the same killing done in our name, by butchers and other professionals who sell us the end results - if we all had to dispatch our own cattle and chickens, maybe we'd see the same duality in ourselves.

It may be natural for a cat to hunt, but I always try to intervene because they've got no business taking out other animals when they're well fed, especially native ones. Tricky issue, especially in some areas.

Everything about a cat, almost, is geared toward its predatory superiority. The way they move....everything. I've studied many predatory animals and the cat group continue to blow me away. Among terrestrial animals, they're perhaps the ultimate predators in most parts of the world (or were, before their numbers were decimated). I am in continual awe of the predatory capabilities and the innate grace of cats, even domestic kitties.

Down int he Florida keys there are still quite a few polydactyl cats, all (I think) descendants of Hemingway's Key West tribe.

How cool! I didn't think there were many 6-toed cats in Ohio. I though the largest population was in Maine/New Hampshire, with the Hemingway population occupying Key West as the 'southern exiles from northern snow.'
