100. Me, neither! I've hated milk since I was a kid.
I was forced to drink milk with dinner and often got sick because I saved it for last... I use it in cooking, but that's it. My doctor has a sign on his wall saying "Cow's milk is for calves." I couldn't agree more!:puke:

56. headcheese is what's left
the little bits of meat that don't go in any of the edible cuts (actually it's mostly the bits of meaty tissue on the head of a pig or cow) molded together with gelatin. Looks a little something like this:

Seriously, I don't recommend it, and this coming from someone who doesn't mind the Montana Tendergroin.

35. Provimi method veal
Edited on Sun Jan-22-06 01:17 AM by LeftyMom
http://www.dawnwatch.com/veal.htm

VEAL

Veal calves are taken from their mothers and placed in crates. They are fed an iron deficient diet, being made anemic in order to preserve their light pink flesh for gourmet tastes. Light pink flesh is anemic flesh. Because desperate calves will attempt to lick their own urine and feces to satisfy their craving for iron, they are chained in tiny stalls with no room to turn around or even lie down in a natural outstretched position. So desperate are they for iron, that the crates must be wooden - the calves will lick at rusty metal.

One would wish the above to be a hyperbole concocted by animal right's activists to make their point. However, the Stall Street Journal (April 1973) published by Provimi inc, the company that introduced this method of veal production to the United States stated: "The main reason for using hardwood instead of metal box-stalls is that metal may affect the light veal color....Keep all iron out of reach of your calves."

When veal calves are slaughtered at 16 weeks they are often too sick to walk. One out of every ten veal calves dies in confinement.

51. Oh, I actually know this one.
Edited on Sun Jan-22-06 02:05 AM by LeftyMom
I'm going to let you in on a secret: most americans eat too much protein. LIke anything, in excess it's bad for you. Rough on the kidneys, but the big problem is that animal foods (especially dairy) contain so much protein they screw up the pH in the blood and cause the body to flush calcium from the bones to compensate.

I was going to recommend a book, (well I still do, if you get the chance check out Diet for a New America by John Robbins) but this link gives a pretty good overview of what we know about how much protein we need and how too much effects us. http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/protein.html

For what it's worth, the only ways to suffer serious protein deprivation are to center one's diet on a food seriously lacking in protein (a big issue in parts of Africa where the cassava root is a staple, since it's only 2% protein, if I recall correctly) or to eat too little food to thrive on. It's really easy to eat get loads of protein on a varied plant-based diet, especially if one eats some soy foods although nuts, legumes and loads of other plant sources offer loads of protein.

Really, my Dad was a steak house chef when I was a kid, my Mother puts dairy in everything, my aunt and uncle owned a livestock auction. I'm the least likely vegetarian ever, but I've been veg for almost 4 years and vegan for a bit over 3. I'm the healthiest I've ever been, too.

104. I eat meat but
I could never eat veal. Today I was kind of tempted to get some at an Italian restaurant... I knew the generalities of what it was, and I thought "well, I eat other meat, so it wouldn't really be that bad." But I didn't, I got pizza instead. Now you have just reminded me why I can't eat veal. That is so barbaric and cruel. I couldn't eat something that was tortured for my palate. I won't eat lobsters, either. I guess it's weird that I pick and choose, but I have grown up on a farm so eating meat is natural for me, and I like the taste, but some methods are just too cruel for me to stomach. Thanks for the info - it's so wrong to make anything suffer like that just because it makes it more "tender."

44. Back in 10th Grade Biology
we had to dissect a big ol' grasshopper. And his insides were made of something that looked just like the insides of a Reeses' cup.

I've already had the hell nightmare, where the Reeses' cup turns into a big ol' grasshopper with oozing innards.

So apparently that's what's in store.

The grasshoppers. Not the Reeses' cups.

If there's somebody standing at the gates offering me a Reeses' cup, I think I'll know just where I am.

I hate the taste of all three even with sugar added. I hate the taste of asparagus no matter what is done to "fix" it. It does make a beautiful flower garden plant though. So fernlike and graceful when allowed to grow up. Collards and turnip greens cause my stomach to war with my other innards. It hurts very bad. I cannot stomach any of these three. That would be hell if they were all I had to eat. :puke:

I can't even handle the slightest bit of greens now, except cabbage, and only because I like it so much I'll eat it anyhow. Forget lettuce, I won't even attempt collards or turnip greens. You must be kidding, right? I would pay dearly for trying those, for sure. I would rip myself a new one, er...without breaking rules, I can't go into details, but it would hurt my stomach and other output areas associated with the stomach WAY TOO MUCH. No way. You can have them all. I don't want any. No, thanks. Be my guest. Take 'em. please. :hi:
