14. My roommate from school beame a shrink
She was often able to diagnose people by phone, just by talking to them a few minutes. She was THAT good.

Therapists are sometimes too arrogant to talk to each other, though I do get a kick from watching the shrink on the Sopranos. When she has to talk to the other shrink about T being such a sociopath, ahahahaha

person with borderline personality disorder literally over the phone before the woman ever came in to see her. The woman kept talking about her "perfect" daughter and her damned money.

15. I don't get where you're going with this, Crazy.
I don't much like Tom Cruise, who has no medical background, attempting to dictate public health policy, just as I don't like religious extremists (like Jerry Falwell) attempting to do that. If you don't believe in psychotherapy, then don't go to a psychotherapist.

104. Re: Nude Encounter Sessions.

So what? Maybe the people who went to them had body image issues, and maybe building up their courage to appear nude in front of a stranger in a safe environment helped them to overcome their issues. Who are we to judge?

I mean, do you call nudists stupid?

Hey, when it gets up into the gums, flossing can't get that out. DO you know I actually had to go to the dentist once when I got a kernel under the gum and the gum swelled. Then the dentist said don't eat popcorn as a lot of people crack their teeth on it.

87. Most of the ones that I know are truly stupid.
They live in a fantasy land.

Then again, I don't know any good therapists. I used to be in social work and have "team meetings" with consulting psychotherapists who truly never got to know clients. None of them were clinically trained and, in a small town, they built their businesses through mutual referrals.

It's sad that anyone can get a degree, a cheap certificate (in WA at least), and call themselves qualified to be a therapist.

(Caveat: I'm sure that there are good therapists, but there are also a lot crackpots in a very necessary and fragile line of work).

My girlfriend, who was excellent, told me of people who were really good, those with whom she worked, who did good research, etc. Since she was living out of state at the time, I would ask her, okay who is good with kids, or who is good with older adults having this or that kind of problem and she would tell me and I'd refer people to them. A friend of mine was going through a HORRIBLE divorce and she said, okay tell him to see this person, etc. DO you know til this day, that friend of mine thanks me every time I see him because of that referrral my girlfriend made. The therapist helped him so much. The worst situations... she always told me to refer them to this one University of Chicago psychiatrist; she thought he was the best on the planet. He was totally dedicated to getting people better, ethical and an outstanding therapist.

94. And there are some people that are mandated to go to therapy.
Parents that neglect their children are sometimes required to go to therapy. Sometimes people convicted of crimes are supposed to go as well, as if therapy can transform an unwilling patient.

There are good therapists. Maybe I was too harsh. However, a good therapist, in my opinion, is client-centered. And they have to have some sort of training or background. Otherwise, you might as well talk to anyone.

no, just kidding. heheh.

First of all, I haven't lived with him under the same roof for almost 25 yrs, so I'm not really in the position these days of asking him what I should, or shouldn't, be doing.

But, in answer to your question, yes, he does ask questions back and believes ultimately everybody is their own "highest guru", so to speak. In other words, he doesn't see his role as one of telling people what to do as much as helping them to hear their own inner wisdom about what is possible in their lives.

Does that make sense?

Crises in the family? I don't think there's any family that doesn't go through that. One reason I'm glad none of my family lives close by. That way, they can all argue with each other and I don't have to hear any of it.

 I think you know the answer to that. A good counselor is a comfort and a guide. Sometimes listening is enough. I'm sure you helped as much as you could.

However, there are many people posing as therapists and counselors that do an injustice to vulnerable people. That's all most of the thread is about.

143. Actually Dr Daniel Amen is a neuropsychiatrist who HAS
mapped the brain via SPECT scans and has documented brain activity in the various lobes and how overactive or underactive brain waves correlate with various conditions...ya gotta stay current to know this.

Regarding therapists, they are like any other profession. There are competent therapists who set goals and then work to achieve them with patients, and there are schmucks who take your money without regard to outcomes.

There are also people who take insulin and can't control their blood sugar because they eat twinkies in between insulin shots even though they know this to be antithetical to curing or relieving their condition...that's through no fault of the endocrinologist...map that behavior onto the field of therapy and one can see why poor outcomes may result.

If you don't think much of him or her, prospects are poor.

I am very fortunate. I have a first-rate shrink, very intelligent, who freely owns up to the limitations of his profession. Our marital counsellor, to whom he referred my husband and I, is also a sympathetic and helpful person. She has helped us bring our relationship back from the brink. Things are way far from perfect and sometimes still suck, but the non-stop tension has broken.
