11. that's a better comparison than Heart
I have to say that the" one all female band getting attention per decade" gets really old.

I'll take L7 for serious ass kicking, myself, although the Donnas do have some good raunchy, funny songs.

15. hey cu!
I just get annoyed when there is only one all female band allowed and then they tend to be too cute or can't really play and get a load of crap for it. It's a weird double standard when there are so many good women musicians and/or all female bands that never get any attention. I have felt that way on and off about SHonen Knife, although they at least can be pretty avant garde. (whether by intention or default!) ;)

How are ya? Hope things are good for you and C in the city! What's new?

18. Indeed -as heard from the voice of experience
I'm sure you got a lot of crap in your day.

Things are good but hectic. I'm looking for a job which is annoying but we took out another student loan to get us through until a I land a real job. I'll have something stable soon. I thought the temping and catering thing would work out but it isn't. All the non-profit jobs I've applied for don't pay enough so I'm looking to get into finance. Which is crappy, but it will pay the bills/debt and leave me enough free time in the after hours to do my art thang. Cross your fingers.

And speaking of girl bands, Cat Power is coming out with a new one this week and it got a decent write up in the ny times. I never got into her stuff because it seemed a bit schlocky, but I think I may pick this up. Any other recommendations?

21. my husband is a huge Cat Power fan
I'm still not sure how I feel about her. Let's leave it at that. But then again, it took me a long time to appreciate Ani DiFranco, oddly enough. A good description of Power is smoky and atmospheric, but I think many people do it better.

Yeah, it's hard to live on certain kinds of work that are easier on your conscience/creative desires, but one has to eat and pay the bills! That's partially why I live in PIttsburgh, I guess. (wish I could live in SF, though) Good luck!

And yes, bands I was in got a lot of crap. I don't think people really know how to parse all female bands. But we did get better over time.

I'm listening to Yusuf Lateef right now. I really like him and there's a huge body of work to explore. If I think of anything else, I will let you know. ( Do you like Yo La Tengo? Wait, you probably know em personally, right?)

22. Yo La Tengo
Just played a bunch of gigs in the City which I missed of course, because we're broke. Hence another reason to want get a good paying job. Cassandra Wilson played five nights at the blue note before new years and I didn't catch one!!!

:banghead:

Ah the sweet torture of living in New York. I have been taking in quite a few museums though which has been nice.

I've come across Yusuf Lateef but never picked up any of his stuff. I've been listening to Saul Williams latest recording religiously. It feeds me well.

30. cool
I don't know anything about him. Cassandra Wilson. Drool.

I suspect if I lived in NYC I would feel the same way.. all this great music and not a lot of extra cash.... but still you get to experience the wonder of the animal that is NYC all the time. And that's a cool thing.

well, hell, I got to see Sun Ra at the Village Gate once, so that will have to suffice!

But it's always the right time to ask people which Donna is the cutest.

I was discussing last night with a friend which Donna we'd take to the back seat!

12. They're OK
I saw them at Lollapalooza a few years ago, having never heard anything by them before, and thought they put on a pretty good show. I still haven't actually heard their studio music, though.

As for the most attractive one, I'm partial to the one on the right end in that picture. (I'm not sure which letter she is, though...)

And they don't even remind me of the Go-Gos very much. Donna A has a great rock voice, and they're close to making a masterpiece CD.
