Some computer buying advice, please?
A while back, I posted this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=4151784

The responses were very helpful, but I've decided against building my own computer, mostly because of time restraints. So, I'd like to be able to have a good deal of say as to what goes in the machine, but since I don't have the time to build it myself I'd like to find a reliable vendor. Any suggestions?

1. I have purchased three computers from this company.
My brother has purchased two from them. I STILL can't get Mom and Dad to stop shopping at DELL! It seems that they like the "support" that dell offers. (I hate to see their money used to support the dark side)

http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/

Cyberpower has a "build it yourself" menu and you have many options on every component. I priced the system I own now on http://www.pricewatch.com/ and it was cheaper to have cyberpower build it and burn it in than to buy the parts from pricewatch.

I did have a memory problem on my last machine and I was sent a new stick the day I called.

Thats my suggestion for the time strapped shopper.

2. Personally, I would suggest
soliciting advice from people in your local area, and visiting some local computer shops.
In my experience you'll get the best service and bang for your buck that way, both before and after you actually buy the thing.
In-city support is always a great thing to have. If you lived in Winnipeg I could give you a ton of advice!
Compare prices, warranties, specs, and service as well as stories from people you know.
I really think thats the best way to do it.

3. I've checked some local shops
I was unimpressed, to say the least - basically, they were the same brand-name, underpowered, overpriced stuff they cram on the shelves in retail stores, just with more knowledgeable salesmen.

6. Dpending on what the purpose is, I have bought computer
parts and or whole systems from Monarch Computerand from Velocity Micro. Both computers from these two vendors were very well built with high quality parts of my choosing. When I had questions or problems, they took care of the situation quickly; especially Velocity Micro. It's customer service is very good.

8. If there's one near you
might want to try Fry's Electronics, The people working there are really helpful compared to Best Buy, I think because they get actually get paid 12-13 dollars an hour compared to the 7 dollars an hour at Best Buy. if you don't find one near your home you can check out their website http://www.outpost.com/ they always have alot of good deals as well. I purchased a multipe task printer in store last week, I went for one model which was a really good deal, they were out of it so they gave me the newer upgraded model for the same price.

9. I haven't dealt with them in several years, but this place
http://www.totallyawesomecomputers.com/

used to make some great machines at great prices.

The name is pretty lame, but they make a quality product using all off-the-shelf components. So, if you need to upgrade or replace parts later, you aren't stuck ordering from them (like you would be with Dell, Compaq, Sony, etc.)
