Does have this problem with writing numbers?
For some reason, I cannot write numbers spoken aloud down very quickly. It seems to take a while for me to translate the word into the number (1,2,3,4,...). This is a problem of course when someone leaves a message and wants me to call them back. It is easier for me though if for 555-2673 they say five fifty-five twenty-six seventy-three rather than five five five two six seven three.
I also have this problem to some extent when people spell things for me.
I have no problems writing words from speech though. I have always been great at taking notes from lectures or speeches.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is this a type of learning disability or different way of thinking?

1. Yes same here.
I'm dyslexic, and I've always assumed that that was part of it - but I'm not sure as I'm definitely not an expert.

2. I have that problem too
Dunno what it is, or why. Same with spelling. Hearing words spelled out make no sense to me, but I can spell most things out loud without a problem. I think we just process things differently, is all.

3. I have a problem remembering anything that is spoken unless
I write it down. I have a worse time with numbers too. They might as well be an alien language. I can do math on the page, but forget remembering numbers for more than 3 second. I have to write it down to work with it or remember it.

4. Phone number could be thought of as a really big number e.g. 5,552,673
but it is for your purposes a code for contacting some person or organization. As a code, it is rather arbitrary. If you know the system for assigning phone numbers, then the first three digits might give you a rough idea of the location, but the last four digits are almost completely arbitrary.

I think the problem is that they are meaningless. Also, when you convert from a sound to a numeric symbol, you are converting to a very brief code. You might have less trouble writing: "five, five, five, two, six, seven, three." However, that takes up more room on the paper.
