My poor dog. Good thing my inlaws gave me money for Christmas
Too bad they also gave me a bag of pure dark chocolates. Too bad that my dog somehow managed to get the chocolate and eat the entire bag. I know what I'm spending the Christmas money on now.
I took him into the Emergency Animal Hospital shaking, breathing weird, diarrhea, and walking like he is drunk. He's getting iv fluids and treatment right now. The vet assured me that my dog should survive and cost no more than $600.

5. Thanks
I really hope that he'll be alright. My husband and I don't have any children so our dog is like our child.

12. It's the same with us
and The Wiley and Excellent Boy Cat Named Ginger. He's either our "child" or we are his "people." Or a bit of both.

8. I remember a Sunday morning about 10 years ago
when my dog had gotten into something and we had to go to the emergency clinic. As it turned out there were 5 other dogs who had also "gotten into something". As it turned out 2 of the 6 had to go to surgery, the rest were ok...

4. Dark chocolate is even worse than milk chocolate
Thebromine is the chemical that is toxic to dogs and is in higher concerntrations in dark chocolate. For some reason, even though it is bad for them, most dogs really like it. He jumped high, ripped a paper bag, and chewed through a sealed plastic bag to get them.

9. What a drag

I know I have to keep chocolate out of range from my boy too...of course, the entire brisket he took off the stove one day didn't hurt him at all (and there was no trace left)

Sorry for your dog and for the expense...hope you both recover promptly from the shock.

10. Good Luck with your pup....
Suddenly, the TV remote control my 7 month old mutt chewed up yesterday morning doesn't seem so bad....

Annhilated the remote, but at least the pup was ok....

Best of luck...I know what you're going through. About 15 years ago I had a dog who gave me a scare like that when she got into a box of rat poison (someone forgot to lock a cabinet door.)

13. Thanks everyone for your thoughts
We just brought our dog home from the hospital since he is doing much better. He seems kind of tired, but rest will probably do him good. All the worry about him and the $450 bill is a reminder that we need to keep our chocolate behind high closed cupboards.

15. Ouch! That happened to my dogs
somehow a box of baking chocolate was knocked off of kitchen shelf
(I have cats, too...) and all 8 oz. shared by my 2 min pins.
Luckily, I realized it quickly and got them to the vet in time-very scary..and so was the bill.
Now I never keep "leftover" chocolate in the house. I hope everything
is ok for you and your puppy!!
