Okay, the Monkees were basically the first Menudo.

Do you like Menudo, too? How about Boyz2Men? NKOTB?

All manufactured, you fools.

"Pet Sounds" is not the best album ever recorded. Neither is "Smile". The only people who say they are, are the kinds of people who hang-out in indie music stores wearing thick-framed glasses and/or some horrid knitted cap they bought when backpacking through Peru. You'll generally see them thumbing through the "new release" bins, but only buying from the delete bins. They have a $6000 hill-climb bike, but prefer to ride a balloon-tired vintage Schwinn they bought on eBay. They have a Starbucks card, but wear an anti-Wal*Mart lapel pin on their army surplus shoulder-satchel.

Just to set the record straight: The best album ever recorded is a tie between "Xaviera!", by Xaviera Hollander & Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and "Nail" by Scraping Foetus off the Wheel.

It would have been Slayer's "Reign in Blood", but (for the millionth and final time) 28 MINUTES DOES NOT AN ALBUM MAKE.

Brian Wilson is a hack. Next time I see him, I'm going to kick his ass.

Actually, his ass is so fat, I could probably kick it from here, just by opening my front door.

Round round round round, it's big and round...

The Beach Boys played at Reagan's Innauguration. That's how fucking "cool" they are.

Fuck them and the Monkees.

1. Well said! Both are poser bands (the Monkees more so, of course)
who managed, somehow, through all the dope and swill and free sex and stupid vacuous LA beach scene assholeness of the 60s to convince people that they were relevant and important and were producing cutting edge amazing music.

They weren't.

It was crap.

Though I feel bad putting the MOnkees in with the Beach Boys - as much as I loathe the Beach Boys, at least they played their own instruments and wrote their own music and sang their own songs, and sang damn nicely in tune, too. But that doesn't discount the fact that their music is putrid flotsam.

2. Yeah! Fuck them!
(Rabrrr's right!!)

What amazes me is that Charles Manson was dejected because the Beach Boys didn't like his compositions. If they had just admitted that 'Look at Your Game, Girl' was on-par with (or superior to) anything Wilson could come up with, Sharon Tate et al would still be alive today.

3. Yeah, but Michael Nesmith fought the suits in angst. How about the others?
That's right. They had no qualms being spoon fed drones of the corporate machine.

There's a tiny difference between the two...

Still, Mickey Dolenz isn't always good at carrying a tune, and Davy Jones is broadway material so it's no mystery how he managed to work... Tork and Nesmith were legit in the music industry, but weren't really used until after Nesmith acted up/ ;)

I've know or seen people who are exactly this way. My sister works with an office with at least 40 of them, they all drive Jetta's with the bike rack. I'm emailing her this now a link to this post. The part about the backpacking in peru is what cracks me up, they've all done it and look at her like she's some kind of mutant because she's never went backpacking in some 3rd world country.

6. I will not flame you because you have Jaz Coleman in your sigline
but you are sadly mistaken about the Beach Boys, IMHO.

And BTW, the "Beach Boys" that played at Reagan's inauguration were Brian Wilson-free by then-- they should more properly have been labeled "The Mike Love Experience".

Now the Monkeys, OTOH, fuck 'em.

7. Boyz II Men were FAR better than the groups you named.
IMO that's unfair. They had great voices, even if they were manufactured and had the dumbest group name ever. New Edition, I'd agree with.

12. Nope...Pet Sounds was a milestone in the voice as an instrument

in the ROCK genre. You can thumb your nose at it all you want, but the harmonies Brian envisioned were as the liner notes said...downright angelic.

I Just Wasn't Made For These Times when considered in the context of the time (i.e height of Viet Nam, the draft, the impending sexual revolution) was really a masterpiece in illustrating lost innocence and alienation.

Genius is relevant to the genre. Brain Wilson and Carl, to a lesser degree, were (and Brian still is) harmonic geniuses.

As for Smile, while the songwriting is lacking..again the feeling conveyed and evoked were very raw.

I watched The Monkees religiously. Still love them because they remind me of being little and having a normal life. Unlike now.

Odds are you're good. It's pretty hard to write a pop melody as good as Wilson's. Now let me don my knit cap... :D

The monkees I don't care for. Some decent songs in there they didn't write, and some okayish performances, but that's it. But people who wholesale dismiss cheesy commercial pop are ironically themselves reacting more to image than ability. And there's a stereotype to go with yours. :D
