I accidentally let Willie (my husband's cat) out tonight
Edited on Sat Dec-31-05 02:46 AM by SoCalDem
I opened the back slider a bit, and did not notice that the screen was open too.. My husband notices Marvin heading out the door, and saw that Sara, Sammy, Sweets and Willie were ALL outside.. He scooped up Sara, Marvin & Sweets and shooed them inside, but Willie (the biggest scare-dy cat on earth, jetted around the side of the house. We looked for him for hours, and since he HATES me, I tippy-toed around with a large flashlight and finally found him hunkered down by the corner of the gate..(the other side of the fence is where a pit bull lives:scared: ).. We HAD to take a chance and try to catch him before he got too scared. He is a timid cat who runs when you even look at him cross, so we did not anticipate what would come next..Not in a million years..

He literally attacked us.. He must have bitten me at least 7 or 8 times, and my husband too.. Clawed the shit out of both of us..and we had to let him go.. He went right back to the corner he was hiding in, and we retreated to sop up the blood and plan our next move..

I suggested that my husband take the treat can outside with his regular dining table chair and just park out there, and maybe Willie would get in his lap like he does inside..

I sure wish I had thought of that at FIRST!!! He jumped right up in his lap, and let him carry him back inside. We have not seen him since.. He scared himself so badly, he's been hiding for 3 hours..and we have been bleeding for 3 hours :(

He's such a wimp, I never thought he would fight like a cougar..

check out the wounds.. This is on one arm & hand.. The other one is about as bad..:(

5. It hurt so bad I actually cried.. I think my husband wanted to cry
but he's a stoic sort..The wounds are in places that it's almost impossible to bandage too.. I put ice cubes and water in a large mixing bowl, and we just stood there with our hands in the ice water until the water turned red ..I looked for vicodin, in case it still hurt when it thawed out..but the swelling apparently is keeping it from hurting too much.. Tomorrow's gonna be another story though :scared:

2. Maybe he got near the pit, and it barked or freaked him out.
Edited on Sat Dec-31-05 02:41 AM by madeline_con
So he fought as a reaction at first, but calmed down enough to be "rescued" and brought in.

 I could not have stood it if my husband's baby had been lost forever, escpecially when he rescued the others:) I guess we'll survive it all.and I will be more careful about the screen door after this episode.:)

4. Oh dear
He must have been terrified to behave in such a manner-so different than his usual self. I can't imagine he would hurt you under normal circumstances.

Those wounds look nasty. I hope they heal quickly.

Hugs to you, your husband and Willie--it sounds like you all need them. :grouphug:

6. Peroxide and Benadryl are your friends.
Those look like they'll hurt like hell for a couple of days. Take some Tylenol, too (for the pain). But watch the wounds closely - and if it even looks like it might be infected, please go see a doctor.

Poor Willie. He must have been terrified.
(maybe he couldn't see you with the flashlight in his eyes?)

10. Oh, that hurts ...
And looks like an old vet we once had when I brought my female cat in for shots once. She hated it, and we were three people holding the cat down (she was a total sweetie otherwise.) Bu she managed to scratch his hand open, and since I was the one holding her head, got my finger in her mouth and just didn't let go. Her teeth were stopped by my bone, fortunately. And since the vet wasn't finished yet, I just let her chew on my poor finger - it didn't hurt worse than the initial bite, and she hold still then. Nobody could believe I just hold still.

12. Watch the wounds very closely
Cat bites can generate lethal infections and they are nothing to mess around with. Not sure about scratches, but bites can be very bad. If you see any sign of infection you should get to the emergency room right away.

21. ERs are open 24/7
if i'd waited until after new year's, i might have ended up with an infected tendon & all kinds of pain & hassle. instead, i had surgery on new year's eve & was released (thank god, hospitals drive me nuts) in the afternoon of new year's day.

i know that all sucks, but believe me, it beats risking infections of all kinds in your hands & arms. apparently, nasty stuff can happen when your tendons are involved. :)

yes, this happened to the day before nye, surgery was on nye & i spent the night in the hospital. not the best nye i've ever had either, so i feel your pain on this one.

and the cat would be dead.

25. I was all set to make a joke about you letting your husband's Willie out.
It IS New Year's Eve and I have been drinking a bit, so forgive me for that--ok?

Then I saw the pictures of the wounds...

I am SO sorry! Hope he comes back soon!

26. After we sopped up the blood, my husband
went out and sat in a chair, and Willie came to him..Poor Willie is still freaked out by the episode, and we have seen very little of him..

One of my gouges is still bleedins, 24 hrs+ later..The Dr said it was too late for stitches though, so I have a gauze pad taped between my fingers to soak it up..

I cannot even imagine how painful it must be to be mauled by a lion or dog, when a 15 lb cat devastated two adults..

I really do feel bad for making a terrible joke in the face of your pain, but the thread title really DID make me giggle for a second.

You guys rock for loving your kitties enough to try that hard to keep them safe--has anyone told you that lately?

Peace!

27. SoCal, what you need is a feral cat trap, I live in So Ca too and have one
if you would like to borrow it. Cats are 100% different animals when they get out - it's like they don't even know you and are fighting for thier lives. Been there done that. Anyway, I am near LA if you are anywhere near I could drop the trap off or you could come pick it up. It is the most likely way you will get this kid back. PM me if you would like to borrow the trap

29. Oh I am SO HAPPY TO HEAR THAT. Sorry, I didn't read all the posts in
your thread because I became really concerned that too much time would pass and I knew time was of the essence. Well I did read some of the threads and they warned you about infection from the scratches. If the cat bit you YOU really need to get on antibiotics immediately. My friend almost died from an infection he got from a very tame cat that got caught in what he perceived as a frightening situation. Take it very seriously, 2006 is going to ROCK and you guys will want to be healthy and happy. Congrats of getting your kitty back. As a mommy, you are a GREAT ONE, most people would have just said f it and let him stay out all night in the rain.

32. For future reference...
The safest way to catch a terrified cat is using a blanket or large towel. If you can get close enough to throw the blanket over kitty, it makes rescue much easier & safer.

We've had indoor kitties for 36 years, and this was the FIRST...and LAST!!!!

After we were mauled, we brought out the towels.. We were just so stunned that he did not cooperate.he's such a wuss.. He flinches when you open a soda can..:)..

The poor guy was just so damned scared..
