Favorite Defunct Soft-Drink
Not necessarily defunct, but no longer available where you live.

They quit selling Cheerwine here about 10 years ago. I ordered a case on the Internet for myself as a Christmas present.

I also enjoyed 7-up Gold and Crystal Pepsi.

Anyone else like drinks they can't get anymore?

http://www.usasoda.com may jog your memory.

2. They gave us a whole bunch for a yearbook signing party
when I was in high school. It coincided with its inclusion in the campus Coke machines.

To me, it tasted like a suicide, with too much orange soda.

135. O.K. was cool
I only managed to have it 'cause I was in Austin (one of apparently only a handful of cities that it made it to) during the summer that they started pushing it. I got it out of the Coke machines a few times at the hotel where my family was staying. I was disappointed when it never made it to southeast Texas. I liked the weird slightly fruity, slightly cola-ish taste and the strange cans it came in.

24. It's not the same - reformulated here.
It used to be one of a very few diet sodas I could drink because it didn't have aspertame in it (aspertame gives me heartburn)... just good old saccharine. But no.... they had to go and mess with a classic and add aspertame to the saccharine!!

So now it's Diet RC - splenda only.

If all you want is a six-pack they will go in the back and get it for you.

They prefer that you place a standing order.

They call us "The Tab People".

Markets in the NYC area still carry it and allot it shelf space.

I don't know if Mr. Pibb is still available west of the Mississippi River, but dang if that stuff isn't great. It's just a tiny bit sweeter than Dr. Pepper. It's perfect. I miss it more than any other soft drink.

But alas, it is gone. One of the few products Coke has discontinued. Usually they leave it up to the bottlers to decide if they can sell it or not.

137. I liked that one a lot
I thought it was going to last as it was particularly popular among my age group at the time it was introduced (eighth graders!), but was disappointed to slowly see it disappear over the next couple years. I also remember a slightly odder drink Pepsi apparently tried to market for a while, called Josta.

On a mostly irrelevant note, I remember that my best friend was severely allergic to Surge. After drinking it for a couple days his face was bright red and broke out in a lot of bumps that looked like zits but weren't. I'm not sure what was in it in particular that might have caused that, but it made me a little wary about drinking it for a while!

Here's a site to "save" Josta if anyone here remembers it (it lasted from '96 to '99 according to the site) and was a fan.

http://www.murrayhead.com/josta/josta.html

I remember liking it myself, but it probably had a little too odd of a taste for most people.

160. I loved Pepsi Light!
I drank it constantly in high school, until I developed what acted like a bad ulcer. It turned out to be hypertrophic gastritis, which my doctor at the time explained in simple terms as "not AN ulcer, it's more like your entire stomach lining is one big ulcer". Pepsi Light got the blame for my condition, and I had to give it up.

I just googled "hypertrophic gastritis"... and it was NOT caused by soda, unless the amount of caffeine in it may have been the culprit. I'm not buying that, not with the amount of coffee I drink with no problem.
My doctor and parents were wrong about the Pepsi Light. It was framed!!!

Now I want some again.

There was also a dark red, guarana laced product that had a jungle type name in the mid nineties. I don't remember the name, but I liked the product.... when I moved to Colorado, I couldn't find it anymore.

It was a ginger-ale type offshoot of 7Up they had in the late 80's. Not sure if it ever existed on the other side of the border though.

But, speaking of weird Canadian pop flavors, what the Hell is up with the Mint flavored Sprite???

It was similar to Ginger-Ale, and is compared to Vernor's. One of the test markets was the great lakes region, where Vernor's was big at the time. Apparently central Arkansas was a test market also, because even our little mom-and-pop (no pun intended) store had it.

93. I found something online about Pommac:
A Dr. Pepper product of the 1960's. It was packaged in a clear bottle with white lettering and was light amber like apple juice in color. It had an apple-like flavor but could also be compared to ginger ale in taste. It may have obtained its name of the French translation of "pomme" which means apple.

I remember Dr. Pepper's trial marketing of this product in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. All the teenagers thought it was cool because it was sorta like beer or wine.

38. Anything made with REAL sugar and not High Fructose Laboratory Poison
Fortunately, I found a local grocery store that recently expanded their Mexican food aisle and among the new additions are bottles of Coca-Cola imported from Mexico, made with actual sugar. As far as I know it's only the US and Canada that use the refined corn syrup crap. The rest of the world still uses real sugar.

74. The US Bottlers really fight the importation of Mexican Colas.
But there's really not anything they can do about it.

They are selling some retro Dr. Pepper made with cane sugar around here. It is a different taste.

Many people think that New Coke (Coke II) back in the mid-80s was just Coke's diversion to switch original Coca-Cola to HFCS. I can't say that's completely off base.

The energy drink they put out is the best flavored on the market, even if you dont like regular.

However, this makes me sick:

62. Kickapoo Joy Juice was the poor man's Mountain Dew
Oh, yes, I remember it well. Guess that was because I was a poor man, and I really did love that Kickapoo Joy Juice.

KJJ was, indeed, a neon yellow lemon-lime concoction, very similar to "the Dew", but somehow different. It tasted particularly good with Screaming Yellow Zonkers--which were, coincidentally, the poor man's Cracker Jacks, so if you ate your Yellow Zonkers with a dose of Kickapoo you were truly the coolest of all.

Those really were the days. Thanks for all the great memories.

149. I LOVE Moxie.
You gotta special order it in the Midwest, though, and it costs about $30 a case shipped. :(

158. I live Moxie too
in NoCal they have it at Beverages And More (known locally as BevMo). I just tried it for the first time a few months ago. I wish they made Diet Moxie, I would get seriously addicted.

You can get them cheaper, that was just to show that it is available.

154. Orbitz (non-Canadians just don't understand this):
Nor did most Canadians, apparently.

http://joelavin.com/orbitz.html

Person who thought to put Round Floaty Chunks in a drink: " Sir, would you like to hear our idea about a new drink with round floaty chunks in it, eh?"

Chairman of the Board: "Round Floaty Chunks! Round Floaty Chunks! That's brilliant! What this company needs are more ingenious people like you. We'll be rich. Rich, I say."

http://www.lanceandeskimo.com/chefelf/bev_orbitz.shtml

Fuck the nay-sayers. Orbitz was delicious, and it was like a disposable lava-lamp. When it was discontinued, I bought three flats from Costco, and rationed them to last six months. The last one was particularly delicious.

I can't believe anyone else even remembers it... but Google "Orbitz drink", and see how many pages pop up!

164. I remember that
Orbitz and Crystal Pepsi were both really popular for a year or so when I was in school.

Crystal Pepsi was pretty good. I never was brave enough to try Orbitz, but we did some tests on the stuff in Chemistry.

171. Yeah, but I hate bubble-tea.
Edited on Sun Jan-01-06 09:14 PM by CanuckAmok
The gelatinous gooballs in bubble tea are too big.

(note: this is "Sandy" from the Cleavland chapter of MENSA. If she's so smart, why is she drinking bubble tea?)

but, floaty things in drinks & all

Slimy gelatinous lumps of tapioca in a fruity beverage is apparently the new black.

170. Peach Nehi
Nothing says summer like Peach Nehi.

I also reminisce about Delaware Punch, even though I didn't really like it as a kid. My cousins did, though, so my grandparents always had it on hand.
