11. I dig the
"choking hazard" warning.

Looks like it would be a magnet for small children.

OT, Xema Sab: have you seen the red phalaropes massing in Half Moon Bay and other Norcal spots?

14. Birds are never off topic!
I haven't been to the coast lately! And I don't have Red Phalarope for 2005, and I don't think I'm going to get it. :(

I'm planning to bird pretty much the whole first week of the New Year.

Sunday I'm going to work on my Tehama county list, Monday is the Redding Christmas Bird Count, and Tuesday I'm going down south to the Channel Islands for Scrub Jay. On the way back I am planning to bird Sonoma and Mendocino counties, and somewhere in there I'd like to fit in the Baikal Teal if it shows up again (but it hasn't been seen since the 23rd, so who knows?)

But yeah, I guess the storm has pushed a lot of stuff near shore. We'll see how the storms go... there's a flood watch here, and the Sacramento River here is regulated by the dam, which could be good or very bad, depending on how things go. We're in the floodplain and there isn't much of a levee if they decide they need to release a lot of water. How are things down there?

15. We're fine here.
I'm in central Contra Costa and there's no big water around this area other than reservoirs so we have little worry about floods. The 'creeks' are all roaring through the storm canals. Mudslides are a much bigger threat -- the hills are saturated. This is the rainiest stretch of weather that I can recall since '98. I was up in Sonoma last week and the waterways were already raging torrents.

We're seeing more infrequent birds in the backyard because of the prolonged rains, but nothing all that unusual. There are many kinglets, for example. I usually see them in the parks, but not at home --I may see one in a typical winter. I'm also seeing spotted towhees in the yard and not their California cousins. I hope to get out to Half Moon Bay for the phalaropes before they disappear.

16. Did you read the weather service report?
1-3 inches in the valleys and 3-6 inches in the foothills with more possible locally. Sounds like a wet one.

I should go fill the feeders, but I'm lazy and I don't want to get wet. It's really pouring here.

17. Yes, and I need to go fill the feeders too
The rain really brings out the hungry birds. We're supposed to stay in the rain for at least another week with a short break on Sunday or Monday, last I checked. Walking in my yard is like walking on wet sponges as it is.
Stay dry.

But you're right, you gotta do what you gotta do.

I guess I'll go fill the feeders.
