Sigur Ros
I need to buy a gift for someone and I want to get them Sigur Ros. I can't decide if () is a better introduction or Agaetis Byrjun ... I'm leaning towards Agaetis Byrjun. I hope it's not hard to find as it's a late present.

I'm thinking I might have to kick this a few times to get some responses. I don't think they're too popular.

Ah well... any help from fellow fans is appreciated. :)

1. I think their newest, Takk, might be the most accessible.

2. Really?
I hadn't heard it yet, but read that it was 'boring'. I'll have to listen to some samples and see. The ones I mentioned are my favorites.

I started out wanting to get them Mogwai but all the stores seem to have available is Govt Sessions and I'm not too keen on giving that one.

9. Well, from personal experience I thought () was boring.
But Takk was really good, it might be their best yet.

I heard a few clips and if that's all I can find I'm sure it'll work. If he doesn't like it I'll keep it! :)

20. I can't say
I haven't heard any of the other albums. ( ) is good enough for me, though. I don't think they're going to come back at you some later date and dis you because you bought them the lesser of two really great albums.

6. I really like Ágætis Byrjun
First time I heard the title track was on Jonesy's Jukebox, and it blew my tiny little mind.

I would just go for it. I was a beginner and it worked on me.

7. I have not heard Agaetis Byrjun
But I would definitely recommend ().
I have seen The video for "glósóli" from takk which I enjoyed a lot.
Which ever one you choose I'm sure they will like it.

I've listened to some snippets of Takk on Amazon, and it sounds very nice. Whatever is available I'm sure it'll work out... it's Sigur Ros! ;)

12. I didn't really like that band when Aegetis Byrjun was around
(Btw, I know I probably butchered the spelling there, but what you gonna do?)

However, I really liked ( ) a lot and found I started getting more into Aegetis after that.

So, my pick would be for ( ) cause I found it more accessible.

13. Agaetis Byrjun is the one.
I remember the first time I heard this I thought "this music sounds like what heroin must feel like" NOTE: I've never done heroin -- you just hear people saying how great the first time feels (okay, this might not be a great analogy - but it's what I thought) and I LOVE THIS ALBUM. It hits me to my bones. It's mezmerizing -- best listened to when you are alone (my opinion) because you sort of have to be doing nothing else at the time - to really listen and feel it.

It made the hairs on my neck stand up the first time I heard it.

Am I making any sense?

It's a lovely album. Very different. Very strange. Very moody.

That's my vote. I became aware of them via KCRW in L.A.

22. You never forget the first time....
I like the newer stuff as well. But "you never forget the first time"... It was one of those "WOW! Oh my god - I HAVE to know who this is...." moment. I couldn't leave the radio until I heard who it was. (That doesn't happen very often to me these days.) Thereafter you know what to expect so it doesn't hit you the same way (i.e., the hair on your neck doesn't react the same) :) But I still like their sound -- and the singing -- even though the lyrics are "hopelandish" - Sigur Ros are always recognizable because they sound like no one else.

Have you checked out their videos on their website?

23. No I have not...
but I should.

Yeah I'd read that their newer stuff wasn't in Hopelandish. Not that I'd recognize the difference. :)

18. asthmaticeog enthusiastically uses and endorses "Takk."
Agaetis Byrjun (I don't know how to make cool diacriticals and European dipthongs like Swag...) is also extremely fucking excellent. Though I think pretty much any Sigur Ros you select will represent the band properly to someone who's new to them, it's not like they're big musical changelings.

24. Thanks. Yeah I was just worried...
I was talking to someone about the band and they said oh no, don't get that, that's not accessible enough. Of course I thought well what is, I mean it's not like they're Radiohead or Beck. But then I remembered Takk, and I thought maybe I'd ask the knowledgeable DUers in the Lounge. :)

19. I should be a huge fan...
but I can't get past the singer's vocal style. I do love all things trippy, though, and Sigur Ros definitely fits the bill.

That what made me love Sigur Ros, and () and even Takk are a little less accessible if you haven't been introduced to them before.
