Hey,I finally bought a DVD+/-R//+/-RW drive. What are movies recorded on?
What kind of blank *^%*$# medium do I need to copy my Star Trek TNG discs which are getting crappy and some of which don't play well? Other movies?

And what kind of medium should I record on to back up my files? Will any medium play on any other DVD drive? What's with all the goddamn different formats anyway?

1. Check the specifications for your standalone DVD player. If it is like
mine, it will play anything (including DVD-RAM, but that's not really significant). I used to know the rules, but I've forgotten - I seem to remember that minus is the standard. However, I have had no problems at all using any R or RW format on my standalone or any of my computers.

2. Either format will work in most DVD players if you create copies properly
NOTE: You will need a decrypter of some sort in order to copy your Star Trek stuff.

The formats were simply two different standards developed by two different companies simultaneously. Most readers will read either format, the differences come into play primarily for burning purposes.

That said, I use DVD-R for most everything and have no issues doing so.

3. DVD-R seems to be the most widely used format.
I started out with some DVD-RWs when I first got my player, but they didn't play well (if at all) on my other players. The other formats are good if you are only going to be watching movies, etc on the player you burn with.
