hang on.... Mariah Carey is Black?!
I'm not being a smart-ass for once. I seriously thought she was caucasian, or maybe Hispanic.

But she's, like, full-on Black? Ed McMahon> I did not know that. </Ed McMahon

9. it is sad how the term "diva"
has devolved to the point of being used to describe the likes of ms. carey.

10. Really!
The term "diva" has been debased to where it means any female pop singer with an amplified voice and glitzy clothes.

Mariah Carey is not a diva. Celine Dion is not a diva. Britney Spears couldn't even come close to being a diva.

The term means "goddess," and it has traditionally been used to refer to classically trained singers with distinctive voices (voices that can fill a hall without amplification) and commanding stage presences, with a little emotional instability thrown in.

Maria Callas was THE diva. Kathleen Battle is a diva. Angelina Gheorghiu is a diva. Joan Sutherland is a retired diva.

30. I believe that the modern re-definition of "diva" began with Diana Ross...
I enjoy the Supremes, but Ross does not have killer vocal chops. I believe that an imperious and high maintennace manner like that exhibited by Ross (and all those who came after her) led to the modern usage of "diva"

35. The NY Times dates it to Ms. Streisand
Stephen Holden says that Streisand first made "diva" a term that didn't apply to opera stars, back in the mid 60s, when Barbra was great and her voice had chutzpah. I think she actually is a diva and has been for 40 years now.

And I'd include Ms. Franklin in that category too.

38. ok -- that is sooo wrong.
gay men have using ''diva'' forever!

we've used to DESCRIBE ms streisand -- but she didn't make that term come out of it's opera closet -- we did.

37. I find myself in full agreement with you, ldf
"Diva" used to mean something; now the pop world has decided that any female pop singer whose pitch can be adjusted in the editing board and can sing loudly while "dancing" is a diva.

Pop stars are not divas. Especially not the shitty ones, like Mariah, Celine, Whitney, Brittney, and etc.

17. I was a foot away from her, backstage at the American Music Awards, years
ago. She was gorgeous, I must say -- breath-taking. But everyone patently hated her, and she was actually standing all alone.

Earlier, in the actual show, she got booed -- I think it was something to do with Tommy Mottolla or the perception that she didn't earn her way in. Dunno. I admired her voice, though I thought she was too busy showing it off that she forgot to actually feel the song, but when I saw her backstage I couldn't help feeling a little bit sorry for her, no matter what she might be like. I said hello and she said it back and smiled, and that was it. At least she smiled, though...she seemed sad. She may not be a nice person, for all I know, but she was nice to me for the few-second intersection of our paths.

27. Who only got a record contract by marrying Tommy Mottola
And if the CEO of CBS/Columbia/Epic/Sony records says give my wife a contract, who's gonna deny it?

Not saying she can't sing. Only that she got help that a lot of singers just as good or better never got.

34. No, she got a recording contract because she has one of the greatest
voices of all time.

She has truly one of the most perfect voices ever packaged in a human. Her personality aside, you cannot compare the quality and ability of her voice with anyone else on the planet. It just doesn't exist... she's like a stradovarious violin, unique, priceless and without compare.

I can't stand her personally, have worked with her, but her instrument is as close to perfection as it could ever possibly be.

39. Shakira Has a Gorgeous Voice
If she switched to bel canto, she could own the opera world. She's got a good range, a beautiful tone, power without force plus she's easy on the eyes (and I'm a hetero chick!). I don't know much about her as a person, but she seems so nice on top of everything else!

performed in Argentina during unrest because she wanted to do something for her fans. She had a huge turnout. Her father is Lebanese, so she has an interesting mix. She speaks five languages.
