House fire may have started in snake cage

(12-23) 14:47 PST ROHNERT PARK -- A pet snake perished and a house was extensively damaged in a fire that may have been sparked by the reptile's warming light in the living room of 7775 Bernice Court, authorities said.

Fire Capt. David Welch said it appeared that the light in the snake's cage either got too hot or shorted out sometime Thursday night or this morning.

The home was empty at the time because the three college students who rent it were visiting relatives for the holidays, he said.
