Question about salary requirements when applying for a job
(I posted this in the Career Group too)

This may be kind of a stupid question, but what is the best approach when potential employers ask for you to note your salary requirements in your cover letter? I wasn't asked this when applying for my previous jobs and I'm not even sure how to word it.

1. Man, that's a tough one
If asked in person, you can say "well, I was wondering what salary was being offered..."

Perhaps the best tact is to ignore that request -- I don't know though..

2. Try to do a search for what the average salary is for the job before you
write your letter. That will give you an idea of what the range is. I forget the website, but I think Monster has a feature like that and I know there are other websites that give averages for the city, the job, and the experience level.

Then you should be able to come up with a sentence along the lines of, "I'm seeking a salary in the mid 40's, negotiable depending on benefits package offered." (But phrase it better than that. The websites I mentioned will probably have examples you can look to for help with how to word it).

3. I'm going with something like that, just giving a range
Thanks!

6. A canned generic answer would be,
"Well, if we both decide this opportunity would be a good fit for both of us I'm sure we can work out an arrangement that's fair to all." Or something like that.
