Am I a cheapskate secret Santa?
We did secret Santa at work this year, three $1 gifts followed with a $5 gift.

I made one of these:

as the $5 gift, and I overheard someone say that I was cheap to just make something and not buy something.

1. The coworker was an idiot.
I think you did quite well for $5.

2. I thought it was okay,
I sell the darn things for $18, but I always give away more than I sell.

3. No way - you are cool!
I would think it was really cool to get something someone made rather than a $5 store-bought gift!

Just one question.

What is it?

:P

4. Just a useless little decoration,
I put a string of Christmas lights inside a glass block, and put a ribbon around it like a package. BTW, the photo is not one of mine, but somebody else apparently makes them too.

5. Maybe you should print this thread
and leave it on your co-workers desk. It takes so much more effort to make a gift than to buy one. How weird of your co-worker.

7. If you're looking at it from a dollar & cents point of view
that cost a hell of a lot more than 5 bucks. If you had given that to me I would have loved it. Very cool. Nice job.

10. I like to make them,
only takes about 45 minutes or less (depending on how hard I want to push the drill).

8. Handmade gifts are worth far more than mere cash.
How much does thoughtfulness, caring & being considerate cost?

11. I got pencils, plain number two pencils wrapped in notebook paper one year
Edited on Thu Dec-22-05 06:33 PM by tjdee
. I was about 9.

At the time I was really upset, because I had bought something really cool (and left it home by accident). But looking back, I can see that the girl who gave the pencils to me was really poor/her parents forgot and at the last minute gave her that/some combo of both.

The girl who got my really cool gift followed me home to get it.

When you're small, you're totally screwed up, LOL!

Your present is great, and I bet that dummy co-worker would have bought that at some craft store for about 15 bucks!

14. Your coworker is mad because you made his $5.00 bought gift
look cheap!

I think that is an awesome gift and would love to have you as my Secret Santa. :)

Why must people try to ruin shit?

Tis the reason for the season for some.....

15. Tell me your gift didn't get compliments all the way around.

It is WAY cool. And I'll tell you what. Your co-worker was jealous, both of the person who got your cool gift, and of the cool person who made it. THAT is where the comment came from.

17. Many people liked it,
and wanted one for themselves.

The lady who received it is a crafter, and very much liked that is was made.

Shame on him or her.

You are not a cheapskate at all.

18. Your coworker is an ass...but that's already been said...
I think it is beautiful...priceless even. It would look wonderful next to the tree I made out of gerber jars, lights and pine needles. Excellent job Dave. You can be my secret santa anytime.

19. Thanks, Mrs. G!
I found some purple lights for my next one, and a string of 50 sure fills up the block.

You should have heard some of the remarks my family made about my birch branch tealight candle holders...sigh...

20. That same coworker probably whined
about the gifts people bought, too.

Giving gifts is a lovely tradition. What a shame that so many feel that the receipt of a gift should fulfill a desire. The gimme gimme crowd really needs to rethink Christmas.
