Poll question: Favorite John Lennon Song?
Edited on Thu Dec-22-05 09:13 AM by i_c_a_White_Ghost
Since there is a post on the topic of John Lennon about Imagine. I wanted to take a survey of fellow Du'ers on what they think is his best song. It can be with or without the Beatles. Since John Lennon, was such an activist, I feel it would be appropriate for a Dem Underground topic.

For the record, Imagine would be one of them.

14. Gosh, so many good ones
It's a tie between "Her Majesty" because it's so short and "Why Don't We Do It in the Road" which provides a nearly irrefutable argument against Lennon's perceived genius.

Ah, that's not nice; Lennon's okay, but I don't consider him a musical god. No aspersion is meant for those of you who do.

17. "God"
God is a concept,
By which we can measure,
Our pain,
I'll say it again,
God is a concept,
By which we can measure,
Our pain,
I don't believe in magic,
I don't believe in I-ching,
I don't believe in bible,
I don't believe in tarot,
I don't believe in Hitler,
I don't believe in Jesus,
I don't believe in Kennedy,
I don't believe in Buddha,
I don't believe in mantra,
I don't believe in Gita,
I don't believe in yoga,
I don't believe in kings,
I don't believe in Elvis,
I don't believe in Zimmerman,
I don't believe in Beatles,
I just believe in me,
Yoko and me,
And that's reality.
The dream is over,
What can I say?
The dream is over,
Yesterday,
I was dreamweaver,
But now I'm reborn,
I was the walrus,
But now I'm John,
And so dear friends,
You just have to carry on,
The dream is over.

20. Its a beatles song
not just Lennon

"Let it Be"

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree,
there will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see,
there will be an answer. let it be.

Let it be, let it be, .....

And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light, that shines on me,
shine until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it

Of course, here comes the sun is another favorite, silly song I loved as a kid, and Blackbird always makes me cry.

OK. Gimme Some Truth

Edited to add lyrics.

I’m sick and tired of hearing things
From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocritics
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth
I’ve had enough of reading things
By neurotic, psychotic, pig-headed politicians
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth

No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son of tricky dicky
Is gonna mother hubbard soft soap me
With just a pocketful of hope
Money for dope
Money for rope

No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son of tricky dicky
Is gonna mother hubbard soft soap me
With just a pocketful of soap
Money for dope
Money for rope

I’m sick to death of seeing things
From tight-lipped, condescending, mama’s little chauvinists
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth now

I’ve had enough of watching scenes
Of schizophrenic, ego-centric, paranoiac, prima-donnas
All I want is the truth now
Just gimme some truth

No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son of tricky dicky
Is gonna mother hubbard soft soap me
With just a pocketful of soap
It’s money for dope
Money for rope

Ah, I’m sick and tired of hearing things
From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocrites
All I want is the truth now
Just gimme some truth now

I’ve had enough of reading things
By neurotic, psychotic, pig-headed politicians
All I want is the truth now
Just gimme some truth now

All I want is the truth now
Just gimme some truth now
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth

39. "Crippled Inside" - which always makes me think of wingnuts
From the album (remember those?) Imagine:

Crippled Inside

You can shine your shoes and wear a suit
You can comb your hair and look quite cute
You can hide your face behind a smile
One thing you can’t hide
Is when you’re crippled inside

You can wear a mask and paint your face
You can call yourself the human race
You can wear a collar and a tie
One thing you can’t hide
Is when you’re crippled inside

Well now you know that your
Cat has nine lives
Nine lives to itself
But you only got one
And a dog’s life ain’t fun
Mamma take a look outside

You can go to church and sing a hymn
You can judge me by the color of my skin
You can live a lie until you die
One thing you can’t hide
Is when you’re crippled inside

Well now you know that your
Cat has nine lives
Nine lives to itself
But you only got one
And a dog’s life ain’t fun
Mamma take a look outside

You can go to church and sing a hymn
You can judge me by the color of my skin
You can live a lie until you die
One thing you can’t hide
Is when you’re crippled inside

One thing you can’t hide
Is when you’re crippled inside
One thing you can’t hide
Is when you’re crippled inside

41. "How Do You Sleep"...
While it's a shot at Paul, there's a lot in that song that works on any Repugnican or Neo-Con.

And while we're at it some other long lost Lennon goodies:

You Don't Know What You Got
Fame (with Bowie)
One Day At A Time (with Elton John)
Woman Is The Nigger Of The World
#9 Dream
Watching The Wheels

Lennon's music is and always will be universal....sounding as strong and true today as when I first heard them in the 60s and 70s.

Merry Holidays...

42. Hard to pick - none of those listed
I've always loved "If I give my love to you"
And the Lennon poetry that shows up in some works. I believe "Across the Universe" was Lennon's
"Words are flowing off
like endless rain into a paper cup
They slither wildly as they pas their way
Across the universe"

That always conveys such a a vibrant picture in my mind. Likewise so do "fixing a hole" and "for the benefit of Mr. Kite"

44. Forgot Rain!
If the rain comes they run and hide their heads
They might as well be dead
If the rain comes, if the rain comes

When the sun shines they slip into the shade
(When the sun shines down)
And drink their lemonade
(When the sun shines down)
When the sun shines, when the sun shines

Rain, I don't mind
Shine, the weather's fine

I can show you that when it starts to rain
(When the rain comes down)
Everything's the same
(When the rain comes down)
I can show you, I can show you

Rain, I don't mind
Shine, the weather's fine

Can you hear me, that when it rains and shines
(When it rains and shines)
It's just a state of mind?
(When it rains and shines)
Can you hear me, can you hear me?

52. Mind Games
is ONE of my favorites. I can't name just one, really.

One of his more obscure songs, "Scared," contains this lyric:

"Hatred and jealousy
gonna be the death of me.
I guess I knew it right from the start.
Sing out about love and peace,
don't wanna see the red raw meat,
the green-eyed goddamn straight from your heart"

Pretty chilling, no?

i was dreaming of a past
and my heart was beating fast
i began to lose control
i began to lose control
i didn't mean to hurt
i'm sorry that i made you cry
i didn't mean to hurt you
i'm just a jealous guy
i was feeling inscure
you might not love me anymore
i was shivering inside
i was shivering inside
i was trying to catch your eyes
thought that you was trying to
hide
i was swallowing my pain
i was swallowing my pain
