Do you tip your postman/letter carrier?
Whatever the PC term is, do you give a holiday tip to them?

I've always given a little extra tip to my hair stylist (lord knows, she's had her work cut out for her!). But what is the proper etiquette for the other service-industry people? And where does it end?

5. Post Office discourages it
We got a notice about holiday hours and such and it mentioned that they discourage tipping carriers.

6. Not this year
After Hurricane Wilma, we lost our mailbox. The mailman had the nerve to tell my husband that we had to get a mailbox real soon or he wouldn't deliver our mail. Wow, he had to walk maybe 15 feet to my door to deliver the mail. I think they got a little lazy. I remember when they used to walk up and down the street to people's houses. Now, they drive around in the fun jeep.

By the way, we were already in the works to get another mailbox and my husband put it up the very next day. We had a little problem with debris and the mail wasn't our first priority.

15. Well, the Post Office tells him he has to get it done in a certain time
and if he has to get out too often, he'll get in trouble.

"Lazy" my ass.

Sure, they used to walk around (and still do in some neighborhoods, but they are phasing them out) but do you want to pay $1 to mail a letter?
If not, then you probably want them driving in their "fun jeep"

I'm also sure that he didn't say "get a mailbox now or you'll never see your mail again!"

That happens all the time
I hate that. I get my neighbor's mail and someone's mail from down the street (not even the same neighborhood).

. . .the address that the north version of my xxx south address. Geez, it's a mile away! I understand that one could miss South or North, but it's a small town and the carrier is off by 3/4ths the width of the town!

8. Yes, I do.
I also tip the paper delivery man, the garbage pick-up men and the gentleman who delivers my oil.

It's never-ending if you can afford it.

9. I'm going to tip the newspaper carrier.
But on our mailroute there's a number of subs that deliver our mail on any given day. I don't know the proper tipping etiquette for service workers other than bellhops or waitresses/waiters.

12. Yes but my mailman is wonderful
He goes out of his way to be friendly and helpful. He sells stamps from his truck, takes my packages to the post office and mails them for me and always leave my packages at the front door if they don't fit in the mailbox. He even delivers cards from my ditzy aunt who can't remember we moved almost 5 years ago.

Every year, I put a twenty in a card, stick a bow on it and leave it in the mailbox for him.

Edited on Mon Dec-19-05 03:43 PM by xmas74
S/he is one of the holiday people you are supposed to remember(along w/ anyone in a salon, babysitter, paper carrier, etc).
I also send cookies to police, fire, EMS and dispatch.

(BTW-most of the time I can't afford a big tip. I usually just give a card, some homemade cookies and make some cocoa mix for most of them-except for the teenage babysitter and the paper carrier).

18. Boxing Day.
Day after Christmas people in Canada and England give little gifts to the mailman, trash collectors, etc. like the cookies Santa didn't eat.

21. Ours sucks!
Sometimes it'll be around 5:30 and she'll decide it's too late to deliver mail, so she goes back to the station. And we get the mail the next day. I'd say, that's pretty shitty mail delivery. "Through rain or snow, or it's just getting a little too late in the day..."

23. Hell, No - They Shift Routes and Are NOT Personal at All
They also have a well paying job, although I wouldn't want to start at the dog-biting/walking level, and they get points for previous Vet-servitude. I think I'd better shut up.

24. Hell no! She makes more money than me and
has better benefits and shows up anywhere from noon to 4pm. When she goes on vacation the substitute comes around noon every day. Why should you tip anyone for just doing their job. I can see tipping a waitress or similar service jobs since they depend on tips to supplement their poor service sector incomes.

26. I have a good mailman. I tip him.
He always says hi to my kids, and leaves packages out of the rain.

I also tip my auto mechanic. He does good work, cheaply, and honestly.

And then there's my mistress, dealer, bookie, and city councilman, but I'll save that for Protestant Confessional.
