My cocker spaniel is in heat. My town has a leash law. I put her leash
on to bring her outside to do her morning "duty" and a huge yellow lab is waiting for her in our yard

I haven't had my coffee yet

I'm pulling my dog to get back into the house and it's like this 24 lb. cocker spaniel has turned into a whale. I feel as if my arm was about torn from it's socket

Then I get the distinct impression that the lab is going to charge into my house after my cocker.

All the while,I'm screaming at the top of lungs to get my dog's attention

My day has not started out in a good fashion

How's yours?

4. Awwwww, they're just looking for looooooveeee... when my maltese
was in heat, the sturdy little brown chihuahua from up the street would come stand on our front porch and serenade her with the sweetest little howls.. I swear he had a sombrero and guitar!

He would stand there under the light, just howling softly.. it was the sweetest thing!

7. If it's a purebreed she may be breeding the dog
I tend to think that most progressive thinkers know to have their dog fixed unless for some reason they plan on breeding them. Cocker Spaniels tend to be a pretty popular breed.

12. Which I can understand
If you have a purebreed and intend to breed it, that's one thing; But otherwise PLEASE people, get your pets spayed or neutered. While working in an animal shelter one summer I had the unpleasant duty of taking otherwise fine healthy pets to the vets for euthanasia because there were not enough homes for them and we (the shelter) had no more room.

When we approved an application for adoption, prospective "parents" had to sign a form saying they'd spay or neuter their pet but though I couldn't prove it, there were many times I doubted the sincerity of some of the signatures. Especially those of folks adopting males. Some would come in and ask to see the males only. That doesn't necessarily mean much, but along with their behaviors it seemed highly probable.

And unfortunately our shelter and it's surrounding town animal enforcement(s) never had the money or time for follow up. :grr:

8. My mini dachshund went into heat the week she was getting spayed,
so we had to put it off. A newfoundland dog that I have never seen before or since set up camp outside our back fence. It was pretty scary. He would have ripped her to shreds.

11. I used to go out with my dog's leash in one hand,
(my dog on the leash, of course), and a stick or a stone in the other. To scare the horny dogs away.
