Anyone else do this?
I just checked on an obvious flamebait thread, to see whether the poster had been TS'd and sure enough he/she disrupted poorly!

14. Yes, it is. It really makes up for the fact
that I live in a red state where I constantly hear drivel and can't seem to fight them all by myself. I enjoy watching those very types get some truth told to them. It's great. I've noticed that there are a lot of well informed people on DU. I learn more here than anywhere else when it comes to news.

9. sadly, there was not much of a debate on that thread
just alot of popcorn and f-bombs thrown.

I had my own business that Wal-mart took a bite out of. I still do not think they should be in the book business, but almost every retailer is in the book business, grocery stores, drug stores, gas stations. If you look around, it is amazing how every store seems to want a piece of the hugely profitable book business.:sarcasm: In my view the only legitimate reason for selling best-selling mass market fluff is to help support a store like mine, where real literature was available, and very often quite affordable too. But Wal-mart is really no worse than other stores in this regard, including most of the god-awful chain bookstores who avoid real literature as a matter of course.

Ironically enough, shortly after I wrote Wal-mart complaining that they were taking away from the sale of literature, Wal-mart came out with about twenty classic books, at a Wal-mart printed price of 50 cents. Kinda cool, but missed my point, that literature should be available all year round, not just from a passing sale.

10. There's no book store in this town
You can buy books at k mart or Target, or you can drive 18 miles to a Borders.

Two small book stores have opened and closed since I've been here.

15. Unfortunately most people don't want real literature
Except when they are required to read it, such as teens who have reading lists. Then they come in droves for the classics. I worked in bookstores for years and the classics we had would sit and grow dusty until the reading lists came out. Then we'd have to stock up on them because they'd start flying off the shelves.

I myself enjoy the classics and can't understand the type of people who go drooling over the NYT bestsellers. I'm not saying there is never anything good on that list, but there are those people who shop from that list as if nothing of quality exists elsewhere. :eyes: Those are the people that really get to me. Often times things end up on that list just because of promotion and word-of-mouth rather than actual quality. Just because a bunch of lemmings are buying something doesn't mean it's good stuff.

And of course, the stuff in the book departments of Wal-mart and other stores is just bestsellers and other fluff, not real quality stuff. If they do sell a few classics it won't be a good selection, and they'll probably be watered down kids versions at that. The average Wal-mart shopper is not the type to sit down and read Anna Karenina after all.

What are you going to do?

20. Walmart is the last place I would buy a book OR movie OR
music. They only sell the censored versions, you know. We do have a Sam Goody's here, at least. And online is another option that works as an alternative in that realm as well.

23. Of course
You can get the means to kill somebody at Walmart, but not oral contraceptives or music/books with "dirty" words. How effed up is that?

24. "family values" and "culture of life" my ass
They might claim that, but they sure don't act like they mean it. It's so transparent. Bad part is they'd just as soon kill you as let you dare point that out to them. I remember the stupid stink they made over the Poison album with the woman dressed as a cat on the cover. She had her tongue sticking out. They censored that. I remember the Howard Stern book they refused to see. I remember the Jon Stewart/Daily Show book they refused to sell. Ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous nonsense is what they stand for with that type of censorship. Oh but they will sell books saying that slavery wasn't bad though. That's another little known fact.
